This is my anth tile, these are just a few things that I have learned from this semester. This class has gotten me so uncomfortable in so many great ways. I met people I would have never even had the opportunity to if I wasn’t in anthropology. This class has made me stop and really think about the world. As a busy college kid I’m constantly running from place to place to place, so this was a nice break from reality. The fact that I get to sit in a coffee shop and meet people for anthropology homework was a nice change. Anth has not only been my favorite class but has taught me so much inside and out of the classroom. My parents always said your life begins at the end of your comfort zone, and this class has reminded me that that is very true. My manifesto will talk more about my favorite challenges but I have truly enjoyed my anthropology class experience! #anth101morgan930 #anth101 #anthchallenge10

I feel that these photos capture my vision for who I want to be and how I want to contribute to the world. Like the greats before, a good comedian can simultaneously show you what is wrong with the world, and why it isn't such a bad place after all. #anth101 #anth101challenge10 #anth101morgan930 Challenge 1) I learned that though there are many different people in the world, meeting someone completely random can result in so many connections and similarities. Talking to strangers is nerve racking however you’ll never know what you have in common with someone until you communicate with them. Challenge 2) I learned that through the many different cultures of the world, not just one culture is right. Everyone sees things differently and you have to respect that. Challenge 3) I was a lacto-ovo-vegetarian for about a month and I learned that its harder than it seems. It took will power to not give in to my cravings of what I wasn’t supposed to eat. But it was a good experience and I need to try more different things. Challenge 4) language is so complex but there are always ways to connect with someone. Creating a new word to connect with others who felt the same way showed me how important communication is. Challenge 5) when I gave up Instagram and Netflix for a couple days it made me see how involved everyone was with their phones rather than with those around them. Taught me that I need to be off my phone and enjoy my surroundings more. Challenge 6) my roommate and I went swing dancing and got out of our comfort zones. I learned how to dance and how to experience new things just by engaging myself in something different. Challenge 7) I got to know Becca Clancy and how she was different and similar to me. You make assumptions of someone without really getting to know them. Getting to know Becca and how similar we are with our experiences was really cool. Challenge 8) I learned that with those who work in factories in poor countries and in poor conditions, fast fashion isn’t worth it. I couldn’t trace where my shirt was from which means many different people were working on it and it made me feel responsible for others pain and suffering because I bought a shirt that was cheap. Challenge 9) the picture I have of me as a sophomore (which was when it happened) shows my confidence and how I am my own hero for sticking up for myself and not letting someone take advantage of me.

Challenge 10: My Manifesto (pictures in order of challenges starting with challenge 1) Challenge 1: This challenge caused me to step out of my comfort zone and approach a complete stranger. Since our initial meeting I have seen these two friends around Manhattan and have stopped to talk with them several times; they went from strangers to quick friends and all it took was a smile and an approach. Challenge 2: This challenge caused me to realize how we view other cultures often as being weird just because their different but how we have so many different things in our culture that could be considered weird to others. It really humbled me in how i think of other cultures. Challenge 3: For my 28 day challenge I did a graditude journal and it brought so much peace and understanding to my day to be able to realize even on the bad days there was always something to be grateful for! Challenge 4: Honestly I did not get much out of this challenge other than the creative process of trying to think of a feeling or experience that did not have a word for it which was pretty interesting. Challenge 5: This challenge made me realize just how much the category processed foods includes and how difficult it is to not eat them for just 48 hours. However, I felt amazing for those 48 hours and wasn’t bloated for once in my life. Challenge 6: This challenge provided me the opportunity to do something I had been very curious about which was visiting another denominations church. Although catholics are still christians, the way they worshiped were very different from what I was used to at my church and I think this was a very humbling experience to see all the ways we worship the same God. Challenge 7: This challenge didn’t have a huge impact on me other than it was interesting to be able to set a time aside and listen to a strangers life story. Jenna and I agreed on a lot of the “big issues” but I still really enjoyed her company. Challenge 8: I am a strong believer that everyone should at least attempt this challenge. This unit shook me realizing just how little I knew about the other side of my products and the lives of the people who make them. #anth101 #anth101morgan930

My hero story has made me realize that if you trust in yourself and stay consistent you can overcome adversity. I went from not knowing if I was going to college to becoming a football player for a Division 1 program. It has opened many doors for me to impact other people’s lives and I plan to do so. #anth101 #anth101challange9 #anth101morgan930

“The nurse had to insert a feeding tube into this tiny babies nose so he could eat. At first when the feeding tube was inserted the babies heart rate started to rise really fast and then fell extremely low, and all of sudden the machine was beeping very loudly. People were rushing into the room, as the baby was about to lose its heartbeat. I watched as they had to push the bed flat and start tiny baby compressions, then they put an oxygen mask on the baby.” #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge9 #anth101

If you look at the shoes people wear on a daily basis you can see that many people are either wearing Nikes, Adidas, New Balance, or some other brand of shoe. Nike is the largest shoe company in the world and they make these shoes by outsourcing the jobs to countries that have cheaper labor. My very own Nike Air Max’s that I bought from Dick’s Sporting Goods cost me a pretty penny. Most people and even I would say that it was worth the money. Nike distributed their shoes to other big sporting goods stores. The Nike Air Max’s that I own were made in Vietnam were the minimum wage is seventy-three cents per hour in US dollars. This is very common throughout the developing world as they don’t yet have the means to afford a larger minimum wage. The main materials that are used in the making of Nike shoes is EVA or ethylene-vinyl acetate which is a copolymer and cotton is also used in the making of Nike shoes. EVA is produced in China and is seen as one of the more sustainable products and Nike get their cotton from China, India, Turkey, and the United States. The environmental impacts from EVA is that it releases fugitive emissions into the air, water, and massive energy consumption. Also, the improper throwing away of EVA is a problem. In the end I was not able to find someone from Vietnam that knows about the production of Nike shoes which disappointed me. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101morgan930

In this picture, the shirt that I was wearing is from a company called Mossimo Supply Co. and it was made in China. From their website, they state that they have 2300 different department stores around the world. It was first created in Newport Beach California and within 10 years it branched our and is now a multimillion dollar company. I bought this at target and was unable to locate where it originally came from other than the fact that it was made in China. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #humansofourstuff #anth101morgan930

The object I chose were my shoes. I purchased them from an Addidas store in Illinois. They were shipped there from China. I made a few calls to figure out which company or factory in China made them but had no results. The shoes cost $65 but I'm positive the environmental cost was much more than that even though I couldn't find an exact price. For the second part of this challenge I chose to live off of $2 for a day with no running water or electricity. Luckily its the time of year where there's a lot of natural light for most of the day, but I could not imagine having no electricity in the winter. This challenege has made me greatly appreciate and value what I have in life. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101morgan930

for this challenge i decided to trace back where Birkenstock sandals are made. I bought m Birkenstocks from the mall at Dillards. i personally love Birkenstocks and wear them almost everywhere (when the weather is nice). they are so comfy and i think they match with basically everything. so i was curious to see exactly where my favorite pair of shoes actually came from. Birkenstock is actually a German company and is mainly produced in Germany. a cool thing i realized about Birkenstocks was also that they way there are made are super environmental friendly. they use cork and rubber with the use of solvent-free adhesives. they also focus on trying to reduce their carbon footprint. i also read that everything is assembled in Germany and since Germany has very strict labor rights laws, the labor isn’t too bad for these Birks. my best friends boyfriend actually lives in Germany, he was a foreign exchange student at our high school last year, and i asked him about Birkenstock to see what he thought. he said he loves wearing Birkenstocks and that they are actually pretty popular there. He said Birkenstock is known for being cruel-free and environmentally friendly. Overall this made me like Birkenstock even more! #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge8 #anth101

The company that I chose to trace back was H&M, because my friends and I used to love their clothes because of the cheap prices and decent material. My closet is at least 1/4 full of clothes from this company. I decided to trace back a particular shirt that I owned, a simple pink sweater that was made in Bangladesh. H&M clothing is manufactured primarily in Europe, Asia, the USA, and some north African countries. Their silver and gold ranked suppliers (preferred suppliers) are based in Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, and Vietnam all of which have dozens of manufacturing plants. So, I identified the country of origin. After this, I went to the H&M website to see their policies and their supplier list. H&M passed their "Supplier Chains Act" which requires their manufacturers and retailers to disclose their efforts to prevent slavery and human trafficking in their supply chains. They also require their suppliers to sign a Sustainability Commitment for Business Partners and undergo an inspection before any production can begin, as well as face audits time to time to make sure standards are being met. After reading through their policies, I tried to contact the Sweden-based company via email multiple times at different emails (their inquiry email and their information email). After asking the information email about where to find information about certain manufacturing plants, it led me to the inquiry email, but I never received a response from the inquiry email even after 3 days.I continued to research online for any controversy concerning H&M and found an article that stated that H&M came short on delivering its promise (made in 2013) on promising all garment workers in all supply chains a fair living wage.

For challenge 8, I traced back a succulent I had gotten over the summer from the grocery store I worked at. The company is called sedan floral and they have operations across a lot of the southern states and the Midwest. They usually ship flowers from Salina but the succulents came from New Mexico or Arkansas. I talked to my old boss to see if she knew anything. She said they just got the order notification and a few days later the sedan semi truck would show up and drop off the plants. The actual workers from the greenhouses would drop bring the plants. It took a while for the actual people to contact me but they just get the seeds from countries of origin and plant them in their greenhouses across the states and then ship them out. I think the only cost could be to the environment. A lot of succulents are grown out of season and it takes a lot of energy to power greenhouses during the winter months since they don’t grow naturally here. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101morgan930

Being the broke college kid I am, I don't own a 5 gallon bucket. To compromise, I picked up 5, one gallon, jugs of water at my local Wal-Mart. After finding my water, I turned on the pedometer on my phone and began to meander through the store. Doing laps around the store, I began to notice people giving me strange looks as I walked past them for the 3rd time. Besides constantly readjusting my grip on the small handles of these jugs, it was an interesting experience. Carrying 5 gallons of water one mile for one day was enough, but doing it everyday would definitely wear somebody out over time. My experience with this challenge was certainly eye opening. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101morgan930

For my challenge I tried to trace back the Nike brand. I have a couple pairs of Nike shoes so I was curious to see where everything came from. One pair I have was sold to me in Wichita, KS at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Nike has a few distributing systems in Europe, Asia, Australia, America, Africa and Canada. They have contract suppliers in China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. Most factories that assemble and make these shoes are in Asia, China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and some others. The foam and rubber from these shoes come from Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Workers from Vietnam only made $74 dollars a month to produce these shoes. It is very hard to trace back the original origins of some of the products we like today. I talked to a girl named Leena from Thailand about the wages and what we have learned in class. She did not know a lot about it. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101morgan930

For Challenge 8 I decided to look into where Old Navy clothing was made since I buy from this company. The first thing I found out is that there is a factory located in Ashulia, Bangladesh called Next Collections Limited Factory where garments are being sewn. Old Navy appears to only account for 70% of total production at the Next Collections sweatshop. The workers there are forced to work over 100 hours a week, while being cut of their legal wages. They are being cheated by 15% of their legal overtime wages. Young women sewing clothing have been fired and denied their paid maternity leave. They are earning just 20 to 24 cents per hour. Physical punishment and illegal firings are the norm in this factory. U.S customs records showed that Old Navy garments from Next Collections are being shipped to Groveport, Ohio, which is the location of a distribution center of Gap and Old Navy. I found a few numbers, but when I called I just got voice recordings, which led me to a dead end. The source I found on this information informed me where the clothing is made and where it is distributed in the U.S. Although, I know there is hidden information that the media won’t show. #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge8 #anth101

For my #anthchallenge7 I had to get to know Katie Schearer. She is a freshman at KSU and majors in Life Science. She is a very nice person and we had slight differences but for the most part we were actually similar. Our perfect days include being outside and swimming which was ironic. I wouldn’t have gotten to know anything about her if I didn’t have this challenge. It pushed me to learn about her as well as open up myself. #anth101challenge7 #anth101morgan930

I have to say this is by far my favorite challenge. Muriel and I met up at a vegan coffee shop in Kansas City. I learned that she is vegan and I have always wanted to try the cuisine...I loved it! We both enjoy thrift shopping, anthropology, astronomy, and love dogs. Muriel's idea of a perfect day would be to spend the day with herself by reading a good book, going on a hike, to learn something new, and take a drive while listening to good music. We shared each other's life story pretty much throughout the 2 hours we were at the coffee shop. I learned some of her qwerks, likes, dislikes, aspirations, hopes and dreams. We even put together a 300 piece jigsaw puzzle (also a shared hobby) in 30 minutes! Impressive, I know. My "other" was such a pleasure to get to know. I saw so many similarities in our stories too. I had such a good time and we plan to meet up in KC again at another vegan place because she is from Overland Park and I visit my boyfriend in KC frequently. I'm definitely looking forward to that. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101morgan930

In order to meet someone I usually wouldn't bump into, I went along with some classmates to their Easter Sunday Mass. While there, I had the pleasure of meet a nice guy named Ed. After getting to know him, I was able to learn a little bit more about him. I learned that we both have a fondness of old monster movies, enjoy reading comic books, and strongly crave buttered toast. I then asked that if he were in a movie, what would his prefered character introduction be? Taking a minute to think about it, he told me that he would love to be the humble chef, of an expedition crew, in a horrific monster movie. His scene, however, would be the fist time you get to see the giant radioactive centipede devowering it's helpless prey, meaning him. In another part of our conversation, I wanted to know what his idea of a perfect day was. Upon hearing this, his immediate answer was getting to spend the day with his best friends. He said going on adventures with his buddies is what he lives for. With mass eventually coming to a close, we said our goodbyes, and went out separate ways. I may not ever see him again, but I found that I aspire to be like Ed. Courteous, amiable, compasionate, gregarious, and simplistic, Ed is the human embodiment of the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. I hope that Ed will go on to spread his prospective with others. The world could use more people like Ed. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101morgan930

For #anth101challenge7 I met with Ashton from my recitation class. We met at the student union and talked a lot, and I found that we are much more similar than different. For example, we both love football game days as she’s a Classy Cat and I’m in the band! We also are very family oriented and care deeply for our friends. The only differences we seemed to have were our home lives, as I’m a military brat and she stayed in Kansas. I enjoyed getting to know such a friendly soul like her! #anth101 #anth101morgan930

My other for challenge 7 was Becca Clancy. In the hour I spent with her at Einstein’s beagles in the KSU library, I learned that she and I are both freshman but she is living in a sorority and I am living with a roommate in Marlatt Hall. Her parents are split up and she is a bit distant from her father whereas my family is together and very close and small. She believes in pro choice but to an extent which is the same for me. She is a strong believer in gun control, same as me, and she also is against trump same as Me. She is religious (Christianity) and is dating someone here at K-State where I am not religious and am single. She seems to be very outgoing and motivated where I am pretty shy and quiet until I start talking. She is going into kinesiology and I am working towards social work. She sees herself married and still able to work in 10 years whereas I see myself married and with children waiting until they’re old enough so I can work again. She again seems very outgoing and like she is very popular and is always doing something on weekends. She went to Texas for spring break where I went home and did nothing. She goes to parties on weekends where I am too nervous and anxious to even try to go to one. She overall seems like a very nice person and like someone who i would look up too as a friend. I learned that we have different lives and experiences but very similar views. When we talked about abortion we agreed that women should have the choice but that choice shouldn’t be made when they are past a certain point like 5 months pregnant or something like that. And with gun control we agreed with the movement “March for our lives” and we are in full support of it. Though I think I would be more of a person to go to one of those protests like that than she would. We disagreed on the wall that trump would build. I said that I thought there should be a fence or something or add more guards and she turned quiet and just nodded her head so I am not sure about what her answer to the wall was because she then asked me a different topic question. Becca is a very sweet girl and I am very happy to have met her. #anth101 #anthchallenge7 #anth101morgan930

For challenge 7, me and Ethan were partnered up as “others” who were supposed to have a lot of differences. We met up in Hale before class to talk about each other and this challenge. We went through the list and we both seemed to have good childhoods, pretty similar weaknesses (impatience, etc). I learned that I don’t really like talking about myself and he doesn’t either, but now he knows random details about my personal life that most people won’t know unless they become my friend. I learned that Ethan is from Texas and played soccer in high school, and we both enjoy being away from people to read/ watch Netflix. I really liked this challenge, college on a big campus can feel really impersonal and it’s interesting to know little details about the people in your classes that you otherwise never would have learned. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101morgan930

For challenge 7 I talked to Kasey. After talking to Kasey I found that there were some things that were similar between us. We both saw that we were the same when it came to interacting with people. We found that we could only be around people for a while before we needed to be by ourselves. We also found out that we both wished we learned to play an instrument as kids. However, the major differences were between our political views. Her views were more liberal and believes that the government should have more power. I believe that the government should have less and to protect individuals rights. But we both believe that there should be more rights for people who are not represented equally. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101morgan930

Throughout the 28 day challenge, I realized that I tend to draw more on the cartoon side of art spectrum. Each day, I would have a moment to relax on my couch with a lap desk and my notebook. Listening to whatever music my radio through at me, I would corroborate the tone of a song into my insperation. Whatever characters came out of it, whether they be finished or not, I'm proud of sticking to it. These are some highlights of my current progress into a 70 page notebook that I intend to fill front to back with drawings. I'm glad I choose this for my challenge, it helped me get back into the groove of drawing again. #anth101 #anthchallange3 #anth101morgan930

For my 28 day challenge I gave up drinking soda. I was able to go the full 28 days without a single soda. Before this I was drinking 2-3 a day. This was not a healthy habit. I found that cutting out soda helped me to stay better hydrated. Of all the different alternatives to soda I found, the best thing for me to drink is just plain water. I also lost 8 pounds! The only thing I changed was cutting out the soda. This challenge not only aided in better health but it also saved me a few dollars as well. I was no longer spending the extra $3-5 dollars a day on soda. I have decided to adopt this challenge and extended it indefinitely. I want to see how long I can go without buying and drinking soda on the regular. Wish me luck! I posted weekly updates and pics on Sundays during the 28 days. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

28 Day Challenge Reflection: So for my 28-Day Challenge, I decided to adopt a Pescatarian diet for the month. At the start of this challenge, I thought it’d be relatively easy for me to start this diet. I was looking at it from a ethical point of view- it was easy for me to not want to eat meat ever again because I knew how cows, pigs, chickens, and other meat sources are treated when they’re slaughtered. I couldn’t stomach the thought of eating another piece of steak or a pork chop. With this thought, I was more that ready to give it up. I was ready to eat only plant based protein and fish, along with the other food groups (veggies, fruit, and dairy). Everyday I recorded what I ate in the journal pictured above. Naturally, I faced a few challenges. Living in the dorms and having to eat food from the dining halls was a little difficult because of the food choices. That was something I didn’t notice until I started the diet. My breakfasts were fine- yogurt with fruit and granola, and orange juice. My lunches and dinners were the hard ones. While there were an abundance of protein sources, fish was rarely one of them. Fish was served a few times a week, Wednesdays for cod sandwiches, on Fridays for lent, or in the form of seafood tacos. Most days I opted for tofu or hummus as my protein source or veggie based soups. After about a week of the diet, I found myself being more weak and more tired than usual, and this was attributed to having barely any protein in my body. I ate tofu yes, but it was a small amount compared to the meat my body was used to eating, so my body was out of sync. However, I really enjoyed the fact that I was not eating meat and persisted nonetheless. I became very familiar with the salad bar, and opted for more fruits and veggies each meal to make myself full. I also consumed a great amount of pasta with tomato sauce. The addition of the Kramer sushi bar also helped immensely. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with my meals! I did manage to be able to not eat any meat other than fish for the whole 28 days; I upped my fruit and veggie intakes and found other ways to provide my body with the nutrients it needed.

For the past 28 days I have been challenging myself to do yoga. I decided to do yoga because not only did I want to become more flexible but also wanted to see if I could find myself mentally and spiritually. To be honest I could not find a way to enhance myself mentally and spiritually, it was difficult to think when all my muscles in my legs were being overstretched. In the beginning we started with easy poses like the corpse. The beginning of this challenge was pretty easy because I did not have to any complicated moves. We did these sort of poses for the first week and half. Over the next two weeks it got progressively harder, we started with the table top pose which would then move into Bālāsana pose. After this pose we moved onto the Uttanasana which was really difficult. It was difficult at first because you had to keep your back completely straight all the way down without moving moving your hips. Finally we did the Vriksasana pose. This was extremely difficult because you had to balance and keep your foot above your knee. The most difficult thing for me was trying to keep my foot above my knee because I wasn’t that flexible. The poses definitely got progressively harder and became more difficult to do. The experience of this was a fun one because it was a roller coaster because at times it was difficult and easy at certain points. I would definitely do yoga again because helped me keep my body in shape and my mind. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

For challenge 6, I went to a house party where I only knew one person. It was the most uncomfortable moment that I’ve suffered in a long time. I thrive in comfort. I love walking into a room where I know most of the people and they already know me. My boyfriends friends were visiting from his hometown (about 8 guys or so) and they were having a party. I almost didn’t go but I didn’t see the hurt in it and I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. I don’t drink very often and neither do my close friends, but these guys obviously did. So, we had a little bonfire and we drank a little. A couple hours in I was having a lot more fun. In high school I wouldn’t drink at all and even now that I’m legal age I don’t see that much fun in it. I was kind of judge mental of the people who DID think that was the only way to have a good time. I grew up with a religion where drinking was very frowned upon and some of those teachings still echo in the back of my head. It was narrow minded of me to think that way, or to think I was better because I didn’t drink. We’re all basically the same. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101morgan930

For my 28 day challenge I chose to delete Twitter. At first this was difficult for me because I was always stuck to my phone. After about 2 and a half weeks it became easy. I forgot about the app. This challenge has made me realize that social media’s can be a distraction. I also learned about myself. I am way more social without it. I probably won’t download it again. I realize that I don’t need it at all. #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930 #anth101

My challenge for the 28 day challenge was to do yoga at some point every day and to eventually be able to do the crow pose. The crow pose is when you balance most of your weight on your arms. Your knees should rest on the arms right above the elbow and if you practice you should be able to rest in that position comfortably. I chose this challenge because the longest I’ve been able to do the crow pose was about five seconds, which my old yoga teacher said was about average. I didn’t do yoga for over a year since the class ended and I ended up not being as flexible and not able to hold the crow pose at all. Last month I tried doing the crow pose again and I immediately toppled over onto the floor, face first. I really wanted to be able to do it again. The thing is, it’s going to take longer than a month for me to be able to actually do it. Practicing yoga every day is a good way to get on track though. I decided to do about 20 minutes of yoga everyday, either before class or before I went to sleep at the end of the day. I was really good at keeping that schedule for about two weeks, and then I did it every other day. The hardest part for me was time management. I’m very good at procrastinating, even with things I know would be good for me. I really wanted yoga to help me with stress from school, work, and relationships and I think it did. It was a nice solid block of time in which I completely focused on myself and ignored the rest of the world. With this challenge, I learned that I deserve time for myself and that I need to manage it better to avoid stress. Doing a little bit of yoga everyday helped. I’m going to keep on doing and I will be able to do the crow pose again. (I used this picture because I haven’t been that flexible in about 2 years. It’s not the crow pose) #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

Challenge 6 part 2: for my challenge I decided to attend a Catholic Mass Church service. It is something I have never done before. I never pictured myself going to a Catholic Church since I am a strong nondenominational Christian. It was something I am glad I experienced and it is something I never would have experienced if it wasn’t for this class. Catholics have a pope which is different than a Christian church that usually just has one pastor. Pope’s wear traditional white robes to signify their importance. Most pastors just wear whatever they want when preaching at a Christian church. Catholics also differ from Christians because they pray to Mary and the Saints where most Christians only pray to God. Catholics also believe you must go to confession and admit your sins. This is different than my church because we believe you only pray to God to forgive you of your sins. There are many similarities and difference between the Catholic and Christian faiths. Many things I learned while attending mass was very interesting to me. My beliefs formed from what I grew up knowing and what my family believed. I am old enough to make my own decisions on what I believe now and I still choose my Christian faith. Most people that attend the same church have the same beliefs and practices. This is culturally constructed. I never realized how many different religions and beliefs there are in the world but attending a Catholic Church opened my eyes to that. It was a great experience getting to learn more about the Catholic faith and how it is similar and different to my own beliefs and values. #anth101 #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge6

It’s the end of my 28 day challenge and I finally completed my goal!! I finally did a head stand and held it for more than 5 seconds. I used a pillow in this picture because of a horrible head ache but I am able to do it without a pillow as well! Through this project I learned a lot more about goal setting and sticking to things I put my mind to. I wanted to do this for health benefits and so I could learn something cool. Learning how to do this strengthened my core muscles and arm muscles. Since I couldn’t do it at first I started working out more throughout the week to gain more muscle to hold myself up. I learned a lot about my balance and coordination as well. I’m going to look into yoga to learn more ways of centering myself and gaining strength. I’m happy I set my mind to it and completed my goal. At first I would get frustrated and start getting headaches. As I kept working on it I would often times get up and fall over just as fast. I lost patience and would get mad because I thought of this as a simple task I should just be able to complete. Once I started exercising more, I was able to stay up longer and longer. At the end, I am happy I finished my goal and can now do a head stand! #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

Final update to the 28 day challenge! My pull up really didn’t get any better, but I won’t be giving up on it just because the challenge is over! Physical strength is something that’s important to me especially as a dancer and a performer. In order to perform to the best of my ability, I have to be able to endure the different movements and long hours of practice and games. I wish I had been a little more committed to my actual pull ups, but during this challenge I did go to the rec more and experiment with different types of workouts instead of what I normally do. I wish I had focused more on actually working towards the pull up, but I also realize that it isn’t something that can really be accomplished in 28 days. My friends were always very encouraging, whether going to the rec with me or taking the videos of my pull ups. Encouragement made it a lot easier!! #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

Challenge 6 pt 2: To get uncomfortable, I got onto a horse which was quite a new experience for me. It has opened me up so much as a person. Not only was it my first time but it's something that I would’ve never imagined myself loving. This was way bigger that just getting on a horse for me, it was stepping back and realizing  that life is all about enjoying new and crazy experiences. Whether it is getting in a horse or doing something you would’ve never imagined… it has taught me to next time just say yes, because the regret of not doing it would be way worse that the outcome. This challenge was inspiring in so many ways it taught me to just sit back relax and that its okay to have fun. As a college kid I forget a lot of the time that these are the years to have fun and learn about life. I spend a lot of time studying so this challenge has taught me to spend more time making memories and finding myself in this world, what I like, what I wanna do on my free time and most importantly what makes me happy.  When I started Anthropology I would’ve never expected  that it would’ve opened me up to as many things as it has. These challenges really show me what I have, where I am in life, and what I need to do to improve myself as a whole. Challenge 6 has been very special to me, I’ve made a lot of memories in Kansas so far but I think it's pretty cool that due to one challenge it has changed my perspective on how I live my life. The ability to loosen up and realize that these are the times to experience the world and live life, because before we know it these years will be over and we will have to work a full time job so live for now because even though we are technically legal adults we are still kids and its ok to have fun. I come from a city, so there arent alot of people who take time out of their busy schedule to ride a horse. It's unfortunately something that is just not taken advantage of, usually its done only for cash or prizes yet even then it's not that common so coming to Kansas where it is and it is so important to relax and where theres not as much pressure and where money isn't the number one concern it is nice and it has taken me out of my comfort zone

For my 28 Day Challenge, I decided to do a gratitude journal and write three things I was grateful for every night before I went to bed. I feel that doing this challenge really opened my eyes to the things I take for granted every day. I shared pictures of some of my favorite days and mostly these were days where I realized things I had been taking for granted. For example, I learned to express my gratitude for the simple gift of being blessed with another day of living. I also thought more deeply with my gratitude and wrote about things like never really having to worry about where my next meal will be from or that my family has always been able to provide healthcare for me. This challenge was something that I found very beneficial to my life. This challenge was not the easiest thing to implement into my life. It took me a few days to get into a habit of writing down three things before I went to bed every night. There definitely were some nights that I forgot and had to do it the next morning. One of the weekends I went home and forgot my journal. I made up for this by writing down my three grateful gifts each day on my phone and transferring them to my journal when I got home. I found that this was done best at the end of the day so I could unpack everything I experienced and took away from that day and be able to analyze what I was really grateful for in my life for that day. Something that I really loved about doing this challenge was that when I would write down my three things I was grateful for I would often text those people that I was grateful for and thank them for their impact on my life in subtle way. I also loved that it was a conversation starter. I told my mom I had started this challenge and she would ask me every day what I had written down. A few weeks in she told me she had decided to start one as well. I have found that gratitude is contagious but you have to be able to display your gratitude for it to be able to spread to others. Some of the biggest take away from this challenge that I got was that it is difficult to stick with something. Even something that I knew was really going to benefit me was difficult to stay on top of and remember

For the uncomfortable challenge number 6 i decided to go to a random house party in which i knew no one. i got invited to this party from viewing an instagram story from someone i followed but didn’t really know. i asked my roommates to go with me and we decided to go for like 10 minutes. when we first got there, a whole bunch of people were already inside. it was definitely awkward to walk in and not know anyone. nevertheless we persisted and i started going up to random people and starting conversations. i have never been a super outgoing person so doing this was super out of my comfort zone already. i ended up meeting people that were in some of my classes and now i can study with them! overall, it was super awkward at first and people were giving weird stares, in the end i met so many new people that i would have never met otherwise! #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge6 #anth101

This past weekend me and my dad went to our cabin in the middle of the Chequamegon National Forest. This was a cultural change from what I am used to as we are compeltely on our own in the wilderness and the nearest hospital is one hour away if anything should've happened. This past weekend made me realize that not everything is readily available to all people and to appreciate the luxuries I have and not to take them for granted #anth101 #anthchallenge6 #anth101morgan930

Challenge 6: to get uncomfortable I decided to ride a horse. I’m from New Jersey so it’s not a popular hobby. It was very scary at first yet it is something that I’ve enjoyed and can’t wait to actually learn about. This was my first time riding a horse and I loved it. My dad always says that your life begins at the end of your comfort zone so it was very interesting to apply that to my life. 10/10 would recommend and I can not wait to do it again!! #anth101 #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge6

For my Get Uncomfortable challenge I decided to attend a Catholic Mass church service. I grew up in a strong nondenominational Christian home and I attend Newspring Church in my Home town. I have a strong faith and I know my beliefs and values really well. Catholicism is something I have never learned much about but I have met a lot of Catholic people while in college. Since I am so used to my church in Wichita I decided to switch it up and go a Catholic Church. It was a different experience and it helped me understand some of my friends beliefs. I still am sticking to what I believe and my usual church but this was a great experience. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101morgan930

While going back home over the weekend, I decided to go out of my comfort zone by getting lost. I grew up on the dirt and gravel roads of Mitchel County, but there's still some places I've never been. Of course, I have a good sense of direction in my home county, so I could always find my way home. A fear of mine is being in a situation where I need to call for help, but I wouldn't know how to describe where I am. So, I put on my boots, grabbed a bottle of water, and started walking around the county backroads. No street signs, no gps, just knowing where I've come from and where I've been. I wanted to play with that fear a little, so I stranded myself in the unfimilar. When you're lost, roads don't have identities assigned to them through names. Being unaware of where you are in the world is a scary thought to me after being schooled with a world-wide viewing perspective. I realized that being truly lost kicks in a certain feeling of survival. It makes you feel alive in a way. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101morgan930

#28daychallenge update: I have been watching what I’ve been eating along with taking daily walks. I have also been trying out new recipes with spaghetti squash and it’s so good! I recommend it if you haven’t tried it! It definitely feels good to be eating healthy, and not feeling guilty after eating a big bowl of this! I weighed myself today, and noticed that I lost a couple pounds since starting this challenge, due to eating better, drinking enough water and taking daily walks!! I’m going to continue making new healthy recipes and getting outside more often to exercise. #anth101morgan930

For my unthing experiment i gave up elevators for 3 days straight. I usually take the elevator up to the 4th floor since i live in the dorms and i never take the stairs. i decided to give up taking the elevator because i thought it would benefit me in the long run and maybe create a new habit. day 1: at first i almost forgot but after the first few times it got easier. i was super out of breath at first and it was harder to walk up 4 flights with my backpack and coat on. it got easier after a while. day 2: my legs felt sore from climbing all the flights the day before. i wanted to take the elevator but i forced myself to complete the challenge. it was definitely really hard to keep taking the stairs even when i kept going up and down so many times. day 3: i actually wasn’t that sore on day 3 and it was easier than ever to take the stairs and i wasn’t super out of breath by the time i got to the 4th floor. overall, i think this challenge was good for me and maybe it will make me a little healthier even thought it was hard at first i stuck with it and it got easier! #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge5 #anth101

For my UnThing challenge I decided to not eat meat for an entire week. After experiencing this I never realized how often I ate meat and it was a big part of my diet. O tried tofu for the first time and that in of itself it doesn’t any distinct flavor but that it can be prepared well and taste delicious. I realized that being vegetarian is not just a moral thing that people do but for some the decision comes from the environmental impact eating meat has from consumption. However, I can’t go full time with out eating meat but I can now do some meals without it as well. #anth101 #anth101challege5 #anth101morgan930

For my #anth101challenge5, I gave up my car for 3 days and relied on walking and biking to where I needed to go. It was originally supposed to be 4, but I drove to work in the bad weather for my safety as it’s across town! Day 1: First day of no car- Not too bad. Though it was chilly, I biked to my classes and to the library to work on a project. It wasn’t near as fast or warm as driving, but it was bearable and my legs were getting a small workout! At night, my friends and I go to Walmart to kill time and mess around, or go for a late night food run. Not having my car helped us save a little gas and stopped us from spending money we don’t necessarily have to spend which is nice! Day 2- The more I thought about not having a car, the more I wanted to drive it! Every Tuesday, my friends and I go to places like bluestem bistro and other coffee places to hang out and I would normally drive there, but with the cold, I just had them come to my dorm to spend time, and surprisingly it was fun- we watched and bonded over TV shows and saved money by not eating or drinking coffee- a definite win. Day 3- It was a colder day, my face hurt from walking into the wind! Nonetheless, I walked to class and walked to the library again to work on a project that night. It was drizzling and my hands were freezing, but it made me realize that I should start to get accustomed to the cold again. Later, I really craved a coffee, so I decided to try a new place across the street from me, Arrow. And I really liked it! Reflection: During the challenge, I missed the warmth and convenience of my car but I realized that I didn’t absolutely need it to get around. Walking and biking wasn’t that bad, and I utilized the places near me so that I didn’t have to drive. Now, if I wanted to go grab a coffee, I could walk to Arrow Coffee across the street instead of driving to Bluestem; If I needed something from the store, I could just go to QuikCats or the gas station across the street from me. I will definitely try to not be so reliant on my car and try to explore the area around me and find close places that I don’t have to drive to! #anth101morgan930 #anth101

I gave up social media for 3 days (the only social media I use is Instagram and Netflix if that is even considered social media). I figured I’m always on Instagram and Netflix when I’m bored and have nothing to do so why not give those up and see if I can interact more with the people around me instead of isolating myself so I could be alone and antisocial. REFLECTION: it has been hard to not instantly go to Instagram when I have free time in between things that I was doing. And it was especially hard not to do either Instagram and Netflix before I went to bed. However, I did get more sleep because I didn’t spend and hour or so on my phone every night and I did feel more energized in the mornings for some reason. And also I started noticing more things around me when I wasn’t on my phone for social media. I also realized how many people my age are constantly on their phones even when walking. I swear I saw at lease 30 people almost run into each other cause they were on their phones during those 3 days. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101morgan930

Update on my 28 day challenge : it has now been two weeks of being a lacto-Ovo vegetarian and it is still pretty hard. I have had a lot of cravings for bacon and chicken from chick-fil-a but I have not cheated which I am proud of. I will say that I do feel a bit less energized because I have mostly been eating carbs and such. I should probably invest in eating more fruits and vegetables rather than just pasta and potatoes. Still going strong but I will not lie I cannot wait until I am able to have bacon again lol. #anth101challenge3 #anth101 #anth101morgan930

Unthing Challenge: starting on Tuesday, I gave up listening to music, whether it was walking to class, in my car, and even working out! (There we’re a couple exceptions like dance practice when I have to listen to music). I picked this because so much of my time is spent listening to music and tuning out the rest of the world, especially while walking to class. I wanted to experience and actually listen to the world around me. I ended this challenge on Thursday at noon because I don’t have class on Friday’s, and walking to class without music was my main focus. There were a couple times I forgot but overall I stayed consistent with the challenge. By walking to class with headphones in, and working out with music constantly playing, I was losing awareness of the world around me. I would miss out on hearing what other people had to say, or other sounds that would’ve occurred. With headphones in I am only focused on myself and usually I listen to music so I don’t look awkward while walking, but I realized that no one really looks awkward.. we are all so focused on not looking weird and on ourselves that we don’t even notice the people around us. Without my headphones, the walks to class seemed a little slower, but I said hi to more people and stopped to have more conversations. Working out was awful because I could only hear the sound of my own breathing. I would recommend always having headphones to workout!! Without music, I lost a little bit of my good mood at times- I always play songs that reflect my mood so when I’m happy I like to listen to happy songs and I couldn’t do that. It left me a lot more time to think and that was good and bad at times. I think I might continue walking to class without music at times, it was nice to be more aware of everyone and everything around me. #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge5 #anth101

For my Challenge 5 I chose to give up twitter. I realized that I spent a lot of time on Twitter just scrolling through for entertainment and that caused me to be on my phone way more then I would be without it. At first it was hard because I would be bored but I’ve found things to do in the spare time I have. I miss knowing the latest news and things but I’ve became more social in person then before. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101morgan930

For my challenge 5, I gave up my phone for 3 days. It was harder than I thought and I missed the comfort of being able to communicate with my friends at any time and having the safety a phone provides by allowing instant communication and assistance. Yet, from not using my phone I had more face to face conversations and participated in more outdoor activities than usual because I was bored just sitting at home without a phone. This challenge has changed me by making me a little less dependent on my phone and from now on I am going to try to use it less and interact face to face with people more often #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101morgan930

For my Unthing Challenge I gave up YouTube for 48 hours. I would get on YouTube almost everyday to watch music videos or just random videos that I came across. My fav videos include SNL Saturday Night Live skits which are great if you haven’t seen them, they are a must! YouTube is actually a beneficial way to interact with others, considering that anyone can upload a video and reach out to the world. I caught myself at times almost opening up the app, but I did stop myself and distracted my mind with something else! In the second picture you can see that I put most of my social media apps under DANGER on the second page of my phone to where I don’t see them. I have had it like this since August and it has made a difference, I really don’t check them that much, besides accessing Instagram for this class. Overall, I was able to survive without YouTube and find entertainment else where! #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101morgan930

The UnThing Experiment I decided to give up smoking cigarettes for 3 days. At first this was very unpleasant. I found in these 72 hours that most of the time I smoked based on habit. I wake up, take the dogs out with a cup of coffee and light up a cigarette. I get into my car, buckle up and light a cigarette. I finish eating and then soon after go smoke. I also saw I smoked more when I was upset, stressed, or nervous about something. Smoking for emotional reasons was the most unpleasant part and what I missed about smoking the most. What I gained from not smoking was very beneficial. I noticed my sense of smell was better and I didn't personally smell like an ashtray! I saved money by not purchasing cigarettes for 3 days ( About $20!!) I noticed I could also breath better and that my lungs felt more clear. This experiment has further solidified my decision to quit smoking cigarettes. I have decided to vape for the time being but plan later down the line to quit nicotine altogether. I know I will save a lot of money and will benefit my health in the long run too. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101morgan930

28 day challenge, update 2: Today makes it two weeks since I had my last soda!! I can't even tell you how incredible this is. I used to drink two or more sodas a day. I am updating with some of my favorite alternative beverages I drink now. The canned sparkling water my best friend brought home. I particularly like it because it was carbonated and also because it had about half of the amount of sweetness that the carbonated water in my first update featured. They are both sugar free however. The water flavoring packets pictured are a few of my favorite flavors. When I'm not into the mood for carbonation or just plain water, I put in one of these. They are very cheap ($1 for a pack of 8) and are super convenient. I throw a few packets in my bag so I have them everywhere. I have been using more of these since I get more for my money and it keeps me drinking water more throughout the day. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

For my UnThing Experiment I decided to give up coffee/ caffeine for a few days. The first picture is my coffee mug and the second picture is how I felt the first day without coffee. I am someone who can’t go a day without Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. The first 2 days I got pretty bad headaches and didn’t think it was worth it. I realize what a luxury it is to have coffee because many people don’t have access to it. Many people don’t even have access to water. Through this experiment I realized I was drinking more water and getting more sleep. I missed the flavor and it waking me up during the day. I see more benefits to going days without coffee but it wasn’t fun at first. I think I see some things more differently and not to take things for granted. #anth101 #anth101challege5 #anth101morgan930

So I’m still working on my head stand and it’s been going pretty well! It’s made me workout more so I can get the strength to do it and it’s also nice to have a goal that I’m working towards. However, it’s been hard because I’ve been getting headaches from attempting it. Maybe I’m doing it wrong or I just need to keep working on it so I don’t get head aches anymore. I’ve seen improvement and I’m excited to see what it looks like after 28 days!! #anth101morgan930 #anth101 #anth101challenge3

For Challenge 5 I decided to give up processed foods for 2 days. I did not think this challenge would be that hard, however, I never realized just how much of what I eat is not “natural”. My typical breakfast would include eggs, toast, or yogurt but during these two days I only ate fresh fruit for breakfast. For lunch I would eat a spinach salad with sunflower seeds and grilled chicken and cucumbers as a side. The biggest difficulty I ran into was finding things I could eat since I eat at the dining center and do not prepare my own meals. Although this challenge tested my ability to find fresh and natural foods as well as my self control and eating habits, I am really grateful I chose to do this for 48 hours. After the first day at I immediately felt better. For the first time after eating a meal at our dining center, I didn’t feel bloated. I felt so much better about myself these two days than I had in a while. I plan on implementing this challenge into my daily practice by insuring half of my plate at every meal is natural fruits and vegetables. I don’t think I would be able to completely cut out processed foods while still living in the residence halls and eating at the dining center, it is something I would like to try again for a longer period. I feel that during this challenge by giving up processed foods, I lost the joy of eating some of my favorite foods at meals like toast, or cereal. But now that the challenge is over I feel like I have lost the momentum of eating all natural, this is something I plan on gaining back though. #anth101 #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge5

I said this at work a couple times around my coworkers. I smelled one of the body washes I was putting on the shelf and said “this smell has a lot of fragrention for me” the older lady I was working with just stared at me in mild annoyance and kept working. My guess is that this word won’t catch on. #anth101 #anth101challenge4 #anth101morgan930

I was in Wal-Mart last night with a few friends, when I witnessed this event first hand. We were standing next to the eggs, selecting a nice unbroken dozen, when I noticed another shopper start browsing through the lunch meats. After a few minutes of staring, he eventually moved along towards the cheese. He was within arms reach of the cheddar, when all of a sudden he pulls a quick 360 back towards the meats and grabs a package at lightning speed. I point this out to my friends, saying "Look at this guy! Forjogging all around the place. Disrupting the peaceful flow of shoppers." After informing them what the word was supposed to mean, they agreed with me that their should be a word helps describe that feeling of forgetfulness and embarrassment. #anth101 #anth101challenge4 #anth101morgan930

Text•xiety : text•i•e•ty. Noun. The overwhelming feeling you experience when you are nervously awaiting a text from a crush (mostly experienced when you see the typing bubbles on your iPhone screen). Tried the word on my roommate and she knew exactly what it was because she thinks that along with her and everyone else in the world that had feelings, has experienced this feeling. #anth101 #anth101challenge4 #anth101morgan930

Update on my 28 day challenge: it has now been a week of being a lacto-Ovo vegetarian and I will say that it is a lot harder than I thought. I have craved bacon so much but have not caved. I have been mainly eating pasta and potatoes over everything else. I can also say that it has taken a lot of effort from me to be a vegetarian because there are not a lot of foods that I necessarily like that vegetarians would normally eat. Foods such as salad, certain vegetables, and beans. This challenge has made me get out of my comfort zone for sure. #anth101 #anth101morgan930 #anthchallenge3

For my 28 day challenge, I gave up soda. I still crave them so I drink carbonated water when I do. I think maybe it's the carbonation I like best because I don't really think about wanting to drink sodas anymore. So far, my favorite flavor from this brand is the pineapple coconut. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101morgan930

My word is “taksouffle” which is used to describe the feeling of having your breath taken away. It is pronounced “tock-sue-flay” I went to Cancun over the summer and saw a beautiful sunrise and wanted a word to describe how I felt. I started using this word around my roommates and even though they didn’t know what it meant at first they started saying it because it catchy. I told them to imagine a time where they had their breath taken away. And once they did I said now use this word to describe it. They really liked it and I think it is fun to say. #anth101 #anth101challenge4 #anth101morgan930

Persilience: withstanding difficulty and always finding a way to pick yourself up again. Many times we feel as if we are always loosing or something is going wrong. This word is meant to remind people of how truly strong they are. Winston Churchill once said “success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” So next time you feel low just remember you are persilient and keep going because something great is right around the corner! #anth101morgan930 #anth101 #anth101challenge4

Dreave: (noun) the craving of continuing a dream you woke up in the middle of and now can’t see how the end plays out. We have all been there. We are having an awesome dream where we are married to Zac Efron, or just won the Powerball and are relaxing on our new yacht but then suddenly we wake up. No!!! You try everything to fall back asleep and revisit that dream to only fail. That dream is lost and you are left with the longing to continue and see how the rest would play out. I think the world would be a better place by having a word for this experience as people share their feelings of the dreams they were having. People could connect and relate to those around them on the common experience of having dreave and might be more likely to share their dream experiences with those around them. You then in turn learn so much about that persons wants and needs in their life and what a great dream means to them! #anth101 #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge4

My 28 day challenge is to be a lacto-ovo vegetarian, which is a person who does not eat any meat but still eats dairy products and eggs, and improve my health and knowledge of healthy eating. I have always included some type of meat in my daily appetite and it would be good to try something healthier for my body and I like a good challenge.
