Unthing Challenge 5 Reflection:
We were tasked with giving something up to discover something new. I gave up mirrors (my car and Cora's dress up corner being the exceptions). I quickly realized how often I look at myself; glances as I walk by the bathroom, reflections of windows, and ordinary tasks, like brushing my teeth or washing my face. It was a really disconcerting feeling.
In a way, at first, I missed the occasional boost of self-esteem I received from myself. Like, "Hey, you don't like as much of a mess as you feel. Good work!" Naturally, the opposite is felt as well: "Man, my nose is huge, and my face is so oily today!" Leaving both of those behind was liberating. I was no longer congratulating myself on looking presentable, or criticizing myself if I happened not to be.
I never considered myself one who cares about what others think of her, certainly not in terms of appearance. So the results of the challenge were surprisig to me, and got me thinking: Why do we place so much emphasis on appearance? What do we gain from a cynical attitude like that? Certainly if we are judging inwardly, we are also judging others.
