Seeing big, seeing small, seeing my own seeing. I learned a lot about myself this semester. I have come out of this class understating more about our society and the systems that shape it, as well as why we have gotten to where we are. #anth101 #anth101challenge10 #hanschu130

I got this tattoo when I was in Kansas City over winter break. It’s self drawn and it’s something has meant a lot to me for a very long time. I thought this was the perfect piece of art to close out my anthropology challenges. This is an original tattoo that is extremely personal and it basically represents the challenge and “mountains” I will face in my journey. I want everything in life to have meaning, just like the planets and stars do, but for it to be beautiful and matter. I think that the journey is contribution enough. #anth101challenge10 #hanschu130 hu130 #anth101

My manifesto discussed the feeling of being small and insiginificant in a massive world. We must celebrate that we make our lives meaningful. If we decide that we are insignificant, then everything we do will seem insignificant. Life is only as meaningful as you allow it to be. I've had a fantastic time this semester in Anthropology, and I'm glad I got to try all of these challenges and learn all of these lessons. Now it's time to put them to use in my daily living. #anth101 #anth101challenge10 #hanschu130

My core goal for myself is to become a know to not only my community but to the world through my skills. I want to be known as a mentor to those seeing guidance in whatever way possible. This is very important position to be in especially in this time and age because you see many people suffer in all kinds of ways due to that hate going on, and I believe it is because people do not understand each other and to respect others feelings. The core issues my goal to society will help solve is how people need to respect one another, especially to those with different views and lifestyles. In life, especially during election season, people tend to stay put inside their own bubbles and will be quick to disrespect and not reason to those who do not view life the same way that they do. Changing the world starts with individual growth and creating relationships with those who you do not agree with. #anth101 #anth101challenge10 #hanschu130

"He began to have nightmares of a fearsome serpent. The massive creature slithered out from under him and coiled around his chest. Then it raised it’s head to glare in to his eyes. He tried to scream out, but it was all in vain. He couldn’t get enough air in to do so. The boy pried at it’s glistening scales, but with each attempt it tightened. Eventually, he grew too tired to fight. He was about to give up, when he had an idea. He breathed in all of his fears in that moment including the fear of failing to reach his dreams, the fear of disappointing his loved ones, the fear of the serpent’s power. He breathed in all of these fears and let them sit for a moment. He recognized them and let them exist in that breath. Then in one swift motion he released that fearful breath and pushed down on the mighty serpent. It slid down his chest, down his waist, and down his ankles. Then it sat there at his feet, baffled. The serpent tried to coil back, but found great difficulty this time. The boy had moved one of his feet and was stepping on its tail as hard as he could. It hissed furiously and tugged away as hard as it could. The boy waited a moment, then lifted his foot and the serpent slithered away into the dark abyss." #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #hanschu130

If my life were a book, it would be called Comics of a Seemly Timeless Life. The reason why is because it seems like my childhood and early adult years went by really slow. If I keep thinking that, then time can creep up behind me and mess me up to my ultimate goal in life, becoming a famous independent comic book artist. The reason for this dream is that I want to use my abilities, my experiences, and my surroundings to tell a story that not only has meaning and value to real world topics, but to bring the world together in harmony and peace. Also I want to do this without any outside help because this is my story and I want to take one hundred percent of the credit. This is my journey onto my dream as a famous independent comic book artist. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #hanschu130

For this challenge I decided to track back one of my favorite jean jackets. I bought this jacket from an American Eagle in Columbus, Ohio. The jacket was made in China. I couldn’t find a specific factory in China that I could but I guess AE doesn’t provide the factories used to make their products AND customer service wasn’t really helpful but this is my #anth101challenge8 #anth101 #hanschu130 💫💫💫

For #anth101challenge8 I chose to research the products and producers of my favorite shoes, Doc Martens (or Docs). Doc Martens is a British company and produced it's boots in the UK until the early 2000s, when they almost went bankrupt and had to shift to the fast fashion model. I have worn and loved my pair since high school, so it was interesting to learn more about my shoes. The Doc Martens website was where I got a lot of my info (mainly about the leather and manufacturing) but there were a lot of aspects of the process where they didn't give as much info as I would have liked. For instance--they talked about their supply chains and how they have a great connection with their factories and sources, but didn't give any info beyond that. They gave detailed info about their leather certification, but nothing about their rubber sources. I ultimately still love Doc Martens and think they have relatively decent ethical manufacturing practices, but this has been really eye-opening as to how little information a corporation shares about their product, even when they share more than the average company. I am thinking more about who I want to buy from now for sure. #anth101 #hanschu130

For my #anth101challenge8 I decided to track my favorite eyeshadow palette all the back to its origins. This palette is sold globally and is one of the top selling palettes of all time and that is why I chose it. They use proper ingredients and conservative packaging so I wanted to trace how accurate it was. I bought this palette in an Ulta Beauty store in Olathe, Kansas City. I ended up calling this Ulta and talking to a manager about where the ship in and out from and she was not able to give me many details other than most of the stores ship directly from the factories that create the products from designated brands. For example, Morphe Cosmetics has a factory that creates all of their products and sends the products directly to the Ulta stores all over the United States. She did tell me that I could email the director of Morphe and try to get information, but they never responded. I decided to stop with the goose chase and focus on the products I was seeing. They have many many ingredients that go into making eyeshadow, the actual component and the packaging and I found that the two biggest ingredients are flax and dimethicone. That being said, on the website it says all ingredients are in house made and professionally pressed by scientists and insures the safety of each product on skin. I found it incredibly interesting how cardboard was made and how details like engraving and metal design is all added into in house work. All of these steps are done by factory workers, truck drivers, and salespeople and it finally found its way to me! I never cared to think about this before, but now it has intrigued me to keep looking for answers for all things. #anth101 #hanschu130

I began my day by researching more about “the cost” of my Diet Coke. I was met with many dead ends. Being such a large company, the customer service representative didn’t have anyone to connect me to with my questions. From what I was able to gather online, Coca-Cola has made it a goal to be sustainable. They established a bottling investments group that employees over 45,000 people across the world. They make it a priority to keep consistent communication with all of their bottling centers management and create a sense of family. After failing to find much, I decided to live a day without electricity and with only $2. This challenge was a lot easier during the day bc I had the natural light to help. However, when I started to get hungry and had nothing in my room, I decided to walk to Taco Bell. Their dollar menu was what I could afford. As I was walking to Taco Bell however it started snowing and I didn’t bring a coat or gloves. The half mile walk did make the $1 nachos taste a little bit better but it did get me thinking. There are so many people around the world without access to a coat or gloves. They don’t have the opportunity to hitch a ride with a friend to get back to the heated dorms. The world I live in is so different from the majority of people on this planet. When I got back to the dorms, I wanted nothing more than to flip on the tv and watch Netflix, but instead I decided to go to take the stairs to one of my friends rooms and ask them to play a board game. I don’t think that I’ve sat down to play a board game in a long time, but it ended up being so fun. Its easy for me to sit around and watch a movie, but this challenge pushed me to try something different and I ended up loving it. At the end of the day, I had a lot to reflect on. The thought that stood out the most to me was the fact of how blessed we are to be able to live the way we do. Many people don’t have the money or reasonable opportunity to pursue their dreams and live comfortably. This gave me a better idea about how to live more sustainably and appreciate what I have. #anth101challenge8 #hanschu130 #anth101

For my #anth101challenge8, I decided to trace my Birkenstock sandal. I know that they claim to be a highly environmentally friendly company, so I wanted to see if that was true. I bought my sandals from a local store in Overland Park that is no longer in business, so I tried contacting Birkenstock headquarters instead. I was able to talk with a representative, but she was unable to give me any details on where the materials of the sandals come from. There was, however, some information on the Birkenstock website on their materials. The leather straps are treated to be water resistant, but in doing so this creates a large amount of waste water and elements, and the leather is not biodegradable. The cork footbed is made from trees and then synthesized with organic compounds, which requires a large amount of water. Although the cork is biodegradable, the production still causes a fair amount of deforestation water consumption. The metal buckle is made of a “nickel-free material.” Although I couldn’t find what the exact material is, I did find that the zinc is the most commonly used metal in shoe buckles, which is most commonly mined in Canada, the US, Australia, and Peru. The buckles are treated with a powder coating, which produced little to no waste. It does, however, produce small amounts of volatile organic compounds, which can be harmful to the environment in high amounts. The rubber sole is made of latex, which is then molded in pressing factories, producing air and water toxins. Although there are components of the production that are very eco friendly, I wouldn’t say that the entire production is completely environmentally safe. Since the products are exclusively produced in Germany, which has very strict labor laws, it’s safe to say that there are parts of the production chain that abides to proper human rights. However, it’s unclear if those standards are upheld throughout the entire chain. #anth101 #hanschu130

I went a day for $2 a day without the use of any electricity or running water. That morning I unplugged everything and turned off my phone. I never knew how much I relied on my technology. Since it was a Friday, I decided to spend most of my day at the rec. Played basketball and used the public fountains. I had to use one of my recycled water bottles from my bin to refill the public fountains several times throughout the day. After a few hours from the Rec I got really hungry. In order to preserve, I ate 2 slim Jim’s at the gas station that I bought for my $2. That was the only thing I had for the day. I chose to do this for my challenge because I thought about how I was raised and the amount of times my parents have told me that I need to think about those who did not have the same opportunities I had growing up. How there were people who had to think about whether or not they were going to eat a dinner. In reflection and the lesson for the day is, “Whenever you go get your food for dinner, get what you can eat, and do not waste. Be considerate for those who could of ate that last few pieces that you are considering of throwing away. And also, save as much money as possible because you will never know when you when the unfortunate happens and you wished you haven’t treated yourself to that steak dinner and saved that money in the bank. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #hanschu130

I decided to try to track down the sources for Sprite for my Challenge 8. Sprite has been one of my favorite drinks since I was a little kid. I'm a typical consumer with limited time to source the ingredients of my products. After spending most of my day pouring through information from Coca-Cola's website, Human Rights websites, and websites of industries that partner with Coca-Cola, this is as far as I was able to get. I still don't feel like I was able to track down the people who made this drink. It speaks volumes to how far removed we are from the impacts of our consumption. In researching this, I found story about a Guatemalan teenager trying to sneak into a dangerous job with his father's ID to make a living. I also found that farmers all over the world have been displaced for aluminum mining. It's been truly eye-opening. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #hanschu130

The product I chose for #anth101challenge8 was a shirt I bought from forever 21. I bought my shirt at the Oak Park mall in Kansas; which is where I buy most of my clothes. Forever 21 is one of my favorite stores. On the tag of the shirt I found that in the US Forever 21 is distributed from a manufacturing location in Los Angeles, CA and I also found out that the shirt is made of Rayon and Spandex. While I couldn’t find out where they get their rayon and spandex from, I do know what those two things are made of and how they are made. Rayon is made through the wet spinning method, and Spandex are made from a dry spinning method. Going back to the manufacturing location; while I was looking for more information on where Forever 21 makes their clothes I found out that there was actually a documentary about the location in Los Angeles that won an Emmy in 2008. This documentary was about the workers of this sweatshop fighting against the work place violations being made against them. The documentary features 3 women and shares their stories. It was fascinating (and sad) reading about their experiences. One of the women still works in the sweatshop after everything; it’s safe to say that she contributed in the making of this very top that I purchased from Forever 21! I am not sure how the conditions are now in the sweatshops, but on Forever 21’s website they talk about a lot of policies that they expect the businesses that they pair with and that they themselves follow. One can only hope that the working conditions for the workers have improved! #anth101 #hanschu130

I bought my Babolat tennis racket second had from one of my friends in my tennis club, but he had bought it new from a website called Tennis Warehouse. Babolat’s are engineered in France but are made in China and Japan by a company named Yonex. The tennis rackets are shipped over to the United States and then distributed to different stores and warehouses in America. The latest tennis rackets are made of graphite fiber-reinforced thermoplastic viscoelastic polymer, these materials are brought in from all over the world it is difficult to tell exactly where they all come from. The higher end rackets such as Babloat rackets can be produced for about $30.00 a racket, but they are sold for around $200.00. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #hanschu130

My hydroflask is something that I use everyday but never put much thought into where it came from or what it is originally made out of. The journey of finding out where and who created this wonderful product started here in the united states. The company began in Bend, Oregon. Two men were tired of having lukewarm water and wanted a solution. This led them to looking into a type of metal that wouldn’t dent and would keep their water cold. After some changes in manufacturing they settled on a company in China, named Zhejiang Yongkang Xinshidai Industry. Established in 1987, theymanufacture stainless steel vacuum flasks, bottles, travel mugs, and coffee pots. They use high-grade 18/8 stainless steel also from china. Stainless steal is made from many elements but chromium is the largest amount of any element present. Almost more than 70% of chromium comes from south africa by  Assmang Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine and then 40% of that chromium is shipped to China to be turned into stainless steal. The mine is a big part of the community and even have their own facebook profile. The plant consists of crushing, screening, and loading of what the miners bring up. The mine operates with only 60 permanent employees and about 260 contractor employees. My hydroflask’s journey began in south africa as a simple element, in the hands of a miner, then processed into chromite. Which was then shipped to a company in china where they create stainless steal and manufacture it into what we see today. The company then ships it across the ocean to their warehouse in portland oregon. The company would then have to wait for the local store in KC, that I originally bought my water bottle from, to contact them about getting a small supply. My water bottle has bee across oceans and the country with me, and I had never taken the time to think that it had travelled without me. It’s important to remember every product we buy and consume has a journey and was crafted by hundreds of hands #hanschu130 #anth101 #challenge8

I decided to meet and talk with a kid that lives in my dorm, his name is Dashon. We both have a few similarities about us like were both active people and we both live in Goodnow, but we have a lot about us that is not the same. Dashon is in a fraternity and I am not, he enjoys the frat community and getting to know all the people that are associated with it, I however like to go out and meet people on my own and not be controlled by Greek life. Dashon loves his sleep, he sleeps till around 12pm every day and I could never do that. I like to sleep but I feel as if the day is wasted if I am not up before 9am. But I can see that he stays up late at night and needs to sleep till then. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #hanschu130

This is Reagan, one of my good friends and while I was thinking of who I could “meet” to discuss the 7th challenge I thought of her because we are so close but absolutely nothing alike. It goes much deeper than just blonde and brunette, but to what we really believe in to a core. As I talked with her, really talked with her about things we have mentioned before, we discussed our beliefs on the death penalty, and while this is a sore subject for us, because she is for it and I am not. I really started to understand her side of it and allowed her vision to become mine. That being said, I was happy with the conversation because she began to agree with things I was saying and I felt heard for the first time about this subject. I’m glad that I did this with someone I knew and could break through a moment that has always stumped us in the past. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #hanschu130

This is Maddy she is in my sorority her at Kstate! I met her when I first joined and immediately you could see our differences in personalities she is organized, more introvert, and very structured. I on the other hand usually choose to take a more creative route and am disorganized and very talkative. I expected to clash and not want to be around one another. Surprisingly despite our personality difference we get alone great. Sometimes difference don’t have to clash, instead they can encourage you to develop new parts of yourself and improve others. When I’m around Maddy she becomes more talkative and I do my best to stay organized. I’ve learned that being different can create strong bonds that help build both people up! #anthcallenge7 #hanschu130 #anth101

Talking to people about controversial topics or interest might be a little challenging, especially if they don’t have the same as you. I talked to my friend Elijah and we seem to have the same tastes in types of music, style, and common interests. However, one thing that we don’t agree on is, of course, politics. We were discussing topics such as woman’s rights, past and present elections, and the flaws that affect society. We did agree on some points and we disagreed on others too. Sometimes the conversation would get heated an lead into an argument, however, we also seemed to respect our different views and go on the the next topic. That’s one thing I think is awesome about people doing that because it shows how grown they are in discussing they’re own opinions to others. It was awesome getting to know Elijah on a different level and sharing the whole experience with him! 👏 #anth101challenge7 #anth101 #hanschu130

In life, you meet people that will support you and be there with you through tough times. Most would call this a friendship, which is most doubtfully true about me and my friend Colton. On fundamental issues we disagree a lot but the one issue that puts our friendship on a thin line is our preference in music. I love hip hop but hate country and Colton is the exact opposite, so when we listen to music together we are bound to have arguments for hours about why our tastes in music are bad. One time I let him play some of the music he likes, and I really thought about why I don’t like country music and I learned that I did not grow up listening to this sort of genre and I told him this and he said the same about his likes. He grew up in a small town and I grew up in the big city so our musical tastes can be the result of our childhood situations. Also we discussed about how the music we listened to and how the lyrics relate to our lives and surroundings makes another logical reason why our tastes differ. From our dissuasion I have figured out why we are still friends despite our differences. I feel that the reason is because of the fact that we have each other’s backs in risky situations and we give each other advice on school and life so it is always great to get the perspective from someone who grew up different than you. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #hanschu130

I decided to talk with my boyfriend peyton. We’ve been dating for almost a year and a half so it’s easy for us to assume we know everything about each other, but of course we don’t. Peyton really cares about his family and wouldn’t change anything about how he was raised. He told me that he is so grateful for all the opportunities he’s gotten like being able to go to school and pursue what he loves. We have a lot in common including our music tastes, sense of humor but we also have some differences. Peyton is more quiet than me but when he opens up, he’s a fast friend. His perfect day would be a relaxing morning, a trip to a city and a movie to end the night. This conversation brought up some deep topics that I’m so glad I could talk with him about. #anth101challenge7 #anth101 #hanschu130

Share a personal problem and ask your partner’s advice on how they might handle it. Also, ask your partner to reflect back to you how you seem to be feeling about the problem you have chosen. Recently, I have been having some serious problems with trust issues and my friends. My grandparents came into town this weekend and I decided to ask them about my problems. My grandparents have always been able to tell which friends are good for me and the ones that are not pretty easily. They told me that they felt like I knew what the right decision was, I just wasn’t acting on it. They really gave me food advice and helped guide me in the right direction and I am so much happier. My grandparents have raised me since I was 3 and shown me how to be the best human that I can. #anth101challenge7 #hanschu130 #anth101

For my #anth101challenge7, I decided to talk with one of my closest friends, Isabela. Last year, she decided she wanted to attend a Catholic college, something I would never think of doing. I asked her why she preferred a Catholic college over any other school, and she told me that it just felt more right to her to be somewhere that embraces the Catholic faith the way she does. Isabela grew up in a very religious family and attended a private catholic school growing up, so she has a deep belief in the religion. I, on the other hand, grew up in a fairly religious family, but I never felt a real connection to Catholicism. After listening to Isabela, I can see now why she would choose to go where she does; her religion is a part of who she is, so being somewhere that encourages that sense of religion is where she feels at home. Even though we don’t share this same belief, however, we still have a lot of other things in common and are very close friends. #anth101 #hanschu130

For #anth101challenge7 I sat down with Jacob Claycomb. I chose to talk with him because we grew up differently, and currently have differences in our lifestyles. He grew up in a small town with his graduating class being in the 40s, and I grew up in a large town with my graduating class being in the 300s. He currently has a job and lives a more adult lifestyle; compared to my life where I don’t have a job. He had a baseball scholarship in his first year of college; as to me not playing any sports in college. Even though we have numerous differences, we also have many similarities. For instance; both of us will be teachers for our future careers, we have the same music taste, the same sense of humor, and we are both involved in Greek life at k-state! After talking with Jacob and listening to the environment he grew up in, and what is important to him I find it interesting that two people with such big differences can also have many similarities and the same mindset! It’s fascinating hearing about different upbringings, beliefs, and current lifestyles that are so different from yours! #anth101 #hanschu130

This challenge was super hard for me, but that’s the whole point in challenging yourself. There were definitely days where I did want to give up or not do my workouts and I tried my best to finish the 28 days out. I have to say that my body feels amazing, my self esteem is amazing, I feel awesome! It’s definitely made me a stronger person and working out has become my stress relief lately, so it’s been a crazy ride. I loved this challenge and I am going to for sure try to work out as frequently as I can from now on. 👏🏃🏽‍♀️☀️ #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

Challenge 6 Part 2: going to an Asian market and speaking to the owners, I realized something that I hadn’t before. When I was talking to the owner, which was a woman, she talked to me about the roles of men and women where she comes from. We talked about how it affects her relationships by being the owner of her own store. Gender roles are socially constructed within society and that is something I got to see first hand. The gender roles in both cultures are different and stem from the histories of both cultures. I am lucky I got the chance to talk to the owner of the market because she gave me a lot of information about her culture and the roles that men and women play where she comes from. I got to see how one cultures societal pressures can impact another cultures values. #anth101challenge6 #anth101 #hanschu130

Challenge 3 Reflection: for my 28 day challenge, I decided to journal every day. I liked this challenge and it easily turned into a habit. At the beginning, it was hard to find time to write everything down, but I soon found the benefits. I really enjoy being able to go back and look at what I did on a certain day and I really think it helped improve my memory. It has helped me stay on task because it’s kind of like a checklist at the end of the day of things I did and I can plan out my day after I make my journal entry. I can’t wait to look back on these memories someday #hanschu130 #anth101challenge3 #anth101

28 Day Challenge: Final Reflection This is my reflection after my 28 Day Challenge has ended. Wow, this has been a crazy experiment and an extreme test of my will power. It has been 28 days since I had a drop of soda, and I have drinking roughly 64 ounces of water per day. I struggled massively through this challenge, because before this, I drank soda every day…and it was a horrible habit to kick. In the beginning of this challenge, I had vowed to not have any sugary drinks, but roughly 2/3’s of the way through, I wanted something sugary and went for a lemonade and gatorade because it wasn’t carbonated and had massively LESS amounts of sugar in each serving. That being said, I have seen a huge boost in my lifestyle choices, because I am less hungry, my skin is clearing up, and I reach for water now, even after my challenge is over. I am so proud for sticking all the way through it, even if my roommates had to motivationally speak me through an almost break down. It was well worth it.  #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

After 28 days of working towards the splits, I’m not fully there yet. I am, however, a lot closer than I thought I ever could be. I’ve never been a very flexible person, so it’s really amazing to see how far I’ve come in just four weeks. I think with a few more days of work, I can reach the full splits. In the beginning of the challenge, I had given myself pretty easy stretches to start with, and then I never really pushed myself to do harder stretches until about two-thirds into the challenge. I think if I had worked harder at really pushing myself, I could’ve been able to do the full splits by now. Even so, it’s crazy to look at where I was a month ago versus where I am now and see the huge difference. It’s also really interesting to see how much farther down I can go on my left leg versus my right leg, because in the beginning it was the opposite. It’s really satisfying to know that I worked at something for a full month. Even though I didn’t reach my full goal, I’m proud of what I accomplished in this challenge. #anth101challenge3 #anth101 #hanschu130

The 28 day challenge has been a lot of fun! Some days were definitely harder than others to accomplish my goal. This challenge has taught me how important drinking more water is. After the first two weeks I could always tell when I felt even the slightest dehydrated. I found the best time to complete my goal was during class or when I was studying. Having such a large water bottle helped because I wasn’t constantly having to find a water fountain. This challenge has helped me to notice how accesible water is our society and that Kstate does a great job of trying to encourage more water bottles by having so many purified filling stations. Overall I really think that I have developed a new and positive habit that will help me be a better and healthier self I loved doing the 28 day challenge and think that it is a great way to break a bad habit, or pick up a new hobby! #anth101 #anthchallenge3 #hanschu130

My 28 day challenge was fun and I do feel like I learned a lot, but I don't really feel like I could call myself a swing dancer, yet. I think it was probably not my best idea to try to learn a new multi-person skill in 28 days. Making my schedule align with my partner's did not work very well so we were not able to practice as much as we would have liked. However, I don't regret trying to learn to swing dance and I plan to continue working on it even though the 28 days of the challenge are over. I think in the end, that new interest matters more than the "acquisition" of the skill itself. #anth101 #hanschu130 #anth101challenge3reflection #28daychallenge

#anth101challenge3reflection: In the course of this challenge, I can't say I became a swing dance champion, but we got slightly better at keeping our rhythm and communicating as we were dancing. I think we both thought it would be more productive, almost easier, to make this challenge a two-person event, but I think it made consistent practice (and, as a result, a greater amount of progress) more difficult to achieve. Ultimately, however, I'm glad I did this challenge with @chadranthropology. Working on this with him challenged me to get back into shape (I get winded embarrassingly quickly when we dance) and be consistent with the projects I start. #anth101 #28daychallenge #hanschu130

For my 28 day challenge, I was to create 28 different drawings of people in different poses. And without using any references. As a reflection of this challenge, it was extremely difficult to start a habit, especially when you have projects and serious deadlines as well. From the start, it was easy to do the drawings but as time progressed it started to get difficult because you have to think of new poses and switch up the character lineup. As a result, my skills in drawing has improved and my craft in drawing improved which was really the goal for this challenge. As far as continuing this challenge I will probably not continue this challenge because of major project deadlines. I might pick this up in the summer when I have nothing to do. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

28 day challenge final update: After this 28 day challenge I’ve realized that exercise doesn’t always have to be a chore. Honestly, I originally anticipated to hate it. Like I stated in my first post, I always have struggled to find something that worked for me. Thankfully, my mind was changed! Aside from a few missed days, I always looked forward to ending the night with yoga. Most months I have to go to the chiropractor 2-3 times but in this last month I only went once! I’ve noticed that my muscles have been less tense as well. Not only was the workout nice, but the routine I formed brought a lot of structure to my nights. I felt more motivated to get to bed early (which I’ve never been good at). Additionally, I’ve been looking into rec classes and saw that they have yoga twice a week. My roommate and I are planning on going and making it a habit when we get back from spring break. All in all, I plan on still doing yoga weekly and it’s helped me a lot! #anth101challenge3 #anth101 #hanschu130

This marks the end of my #anth101challenge3 When I first started this I thought it would be a lot easier to follow than it ended up being. At the beginning, I counted up the number of total pages and divided it by the number of days I had, and concluded that I had to read 22 pages each day in order to keep on track. I thought this would be an easy task; however, with school work, studying, and other things thrown in it was not so easy. Many days I didn’t read at all which led to me having to read even more pages when I did read. I am glad that I chose this as my challenge. Reading is relaxing. When I did read I left everything I had going on outside of the book and it was my only focus. I think that people should read more. It would be beneficial to all of our minds. #anth101 #hanschu130

#anth101challenge7: This is my dad. I'm on one side of the political spectrum and he considers himself more of a moderate, so there are many things that we agree on. However, one fundamental value we can never come to a consensus on is religion. We end up fighting about it every time we see each other actually, but having a structured time to talk about our beliefs was different. We talked about souls, the afterlife, what differentiates humans from animals, etc. I have a few conclusions 1) it's hard to have conversations when you actually have to Try to have them. 2) I need to find more people beyond my family with whom I fundamentally disagree, and am comfortable talking about those disagreements. 3) Your parents can change, just like you do. My dad talked about his beliefs evolving over time, just like mine have. No one has to be static in their thought processes and beliefs, but you have to be willing to have the conversation, and you have to be willing to admit you can be wrong. I am always working on this. #anth101 #hanschu130

This is my friend, Tyler. We are almost polar opposites on most political issues so we end up having many of these types of conversations. Challenge 7 actually came at a very convenient time. We had just had a very lengthy discussion on the interpretation of American gun rights. That led to us discussing the basis of our beliefs. Ultimately we have many shared values and goals. We just tend to disagree on how to achieve them. I think this is the lesson we all need to learn. We're not as different as we think we are. We're polarizing ourselves before we let others finish their thoughts. If we want things to get better, we need to actually listen to each other. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #hanschu130

For my challenge 6, my roommate and I went to the Asian market in town. I have never been to another cultures market before, only farmers markets. We talked with the owner and she gave us suggestions on what to make for a meal. For dinner, my roommate and I made the dinner and it was really yummy. We also got different candies and drinks. This was big for me because I like to know every ingredient and what things are. When I was eating the different foods from the market, I really had no idea what they were or how to make them to eat them. One thing I ate that was strange in particular was a lotus root. #anth101challenge6 #anth101 #hanschu130

Challenge 6: Get Uncomfortable👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 For this weeks challenge I am going to share my experience I had with my internship this week. I am a local branch manager in Kansas City for College Works Painting. What I had to do this week was market door to door in multiple neighborhoods in my territory. Going up to peoples’ houses and giving them your pitch could be very intimidating! It definitely got me out of my comfort zone and I continue to grow as an intern and student learning through the experience! 🔝📈 #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #hanschu130

To get uncomfortable for my Challenge 6, I'll be going to a local nail salon and getting a pedicure. This should be an interesting experience because pedicures are a predominantly feminine practice in Western society. Nail hygiene is considered more aesthetic than health oriented, so typically men only perform basic nail hygiene practices like clipping. I think it will be an educational event and I'm excited to step into a new perspective. (Updates to come) #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #hanschu130

For challenge 6, to get uncomfortable, I decided to try food that I had always thought I hated. For my mothers birthday we always go to her favorite seafood restaurant, but I had always avoided the seafood because I used to be grossed out by the smell. This past weekend I went home to celebrate her birthday and dined on oysters in a half shell and lobster instead of the usual steak. After this meal, I deeply regret all times I’ve passed up on the shellfish platter. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #hanschu130

For #anthchallenge6 “get uncomfortable” I decided to go eat food that I have always been too hesitant to try. Seafood has always creeped me out a little and I usually steer clear of it. For my challenge 6 I decided to step out of my comfort zone and meet up with a trump supporter. I met adam in high school and we were both very vocal about our political opinions. I consider myself to be liberal and he considers himself to be very conservative. The point of this conversation was to go out of my way to become uncomfortable and have a polite discussion about our opposing views. We both ended up really enjoying our time together and realizing we had more in common than we thought. We decided to make plans to visit fuzzys again next week! #anthrochallenge6 #hanschu130 #anth101

To get uncomfortable this week I decided to attend StuMo, a religious group here at Kstate. I’m religious but I usually choose to go a more personally route and it was uncomfortable for me to share my beliefs in such a large setting. StuMo has a very strong following and many of the students are very enthusiastic to share their beliefs and really want you to be apart of StuMo too. I can be overwhelmed when people are pressuring me to be apart of something that I am unsure of. I’m very happy that they can be apart of something that the love so much and are that passionate, but it was too large and intense of an environment for me personally. I think it is so important to go out and learn about others beliefs, that way you are better able to understand them and make new connections with them. I enjoyed this challenge because it made me step out of my comfort zone which I originally may not have done. I always like to meet new people and hear about what they are passionate about! Understanding people allows you to communicate so much better and in a more effective way, because you are conscious of their values and personality. I may have not loved the experience, but I am very glad to have had the chance to know what StuMo is and what they do! #anth101 #anthchallenge6 #hanschu130

For my “Get Uncomfortable” challenge, I went to a recital for one of the music instructors here at K-State at the All Faiths Chapel. When it comes to music, I am very selective of genres. For example, I don’t listen to anything else other than hip hop or R&B music. The recital moved me in ways that I didn’t know exist. I was thinking I was going to be on my phone the whole time but other than the times I took photos, I did not pick up my phone once. This experience gives me the notion that I need to expand my musical horizons and not just listen to the mainstream genres. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #hanschu130

Challenge 5: The Unthing Experiment👉🏼👉🏼 For this weeks challenge, I have given up meat for three days. I decided to give it up on the weekend, which made it even more difficult. I realized that being a vegetarian sucks and I am never going to do this again. I was offered to get authentic street tacos on Sunday and I had to say NO. Challenge 5: Unthing Experiment For this experiment, I gave up the Snapchat for four days and learned a lot about this social media. For one, I used this as a primary source of communication for a long time and that involved streaks. These streaks ruled my life because you have to keep up with them daily. Abandoning them was a hard task and now that they are gone, I feel the pressure to snap people is gone. I also used Snapchat to check my image all the time through the day and once the app was deleted, I stopped looking at myself so often and it was liberating. Overall this was really effective because now I used Snapchat WAY less than I used to and that makes me incredibly happen. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #hanschu130

I gave up chairs for a day. I knew that this would be hard because the day that I was doing it was a day that I had most my classes. During my first class it wasn’t so bad I just stood in the back. I did get a lot of weird looks from people but that wasn’t too bad. It was when I got to my second class that standing became more of a challenge; we had to write some things down. I had to bend down so I could write on the table and my back started to hurt, also I got a ton of weird looks. I have learned to appreciate the use of chairs, at the end of the day I was so over not being able to sit. When I sit now I think of how nice it is to be able to give me feet a rest. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #hanschu130

Week 3 of 28 Day Challenge For our third week we threw in some some new moves and worked on blending them into our other steps. One of those moves was the tornado. We're still working on the tornado. It requires faster footwork than we're use to and I have to keep from lifting my arms too high. I felt my feet on top of Madeline's a few times and vice versa. The playlist continues to expand and that's a skill of it's own. It can be difficult finding songs of the right beat and style for East coast swing. We're still having a blast and learning immensely. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

For my UnThing challenge I decided to give up Instagram for the week. Instagram has always been the app that I open when I’m bored or have nothing to do, so I wanted to break that habit and replace it with a better one. In the first two days I found myself wanting to be on the app constantly, so I tried to find other things to occupy my time. I decided to download an ebook to read when I felt the urge to open Instagram, and by the last day I had completely forgotten about wanting to have Instagram in the first place. At first I was worried that I would feel disconnected from people because I couldn’t see what they were posting, but now that I have Instagram again I don’t feel as much of a need to have the app always open. I’ve found that I’m more inclined to read now, and I’ve started on my second book since the challenge started. #anth101challenge5 #anth101 #hanschu130

For #anth101challenge5 I gave up gluten from my diet. This has been a difficult adjustment. I haven’t been able to eat my favorite foods, and anytime I want to eat something or go eat somewhere I have to look up if the food is gluten free/what gluten free options the restaurant has. When people think of gluten they think of bread; however, It is surprising how many things have gluten that you wouldn’t think do. Going gluten free has given me a better understanding of what people with celiac disease have to do in order to make sure their diet is gluten free. I definitely have missed eating pasta (my favorite food), but following a gluten free diet led me to try new foods and order new meals I normally wouldn’t have at restaurants! #anth101 #hanschu130

I gave up Reddit, my great time consumer for my unthing challenge. I easily spend 2.5 to 5 hours of my time everyday on Reddit. It was especially difficult this week to not have Reddit since it is my main news source. I ended up going to a much more varied list of news sources as a result which I feel benefited me overall. I learned just how long I spend "redditing" on a daily basis from this activity. Sites like Reddit provide a service of connection between users around the world, but also provide a bias that comes with the user base. Whatever the "hive mind" of Reddit believes in will dominate the front page. I think finding a nice balance of content from within and beyond our comfort zones is the key to expanding our view and ability to have conversations within our societies again. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #hanschu130

#anth101challenge5: For my challenge, I only used the call and text functions of my phone, essentially turning it back into a flip phone for the 72 hour duration of my challenge. I still used my computer during the challenge, but stayed off of social media on my computer as well. I actually ended up starting over once because I ended up cheating so much (guilty) on my first day. Here are my thoughts on the three biggest struggles of my challenge. Picture 1: Social media Giving up social media was not as hard as I had expected. I caught myself opening Instagram or Pintrest out of boredom in the beginning stages of the challenge, but it was relatively easy to cut myself off. This challenge made me wonder if I could cut back on social media even more, and has made me more mindful of when/why I use social media. Picture 2: Spotify This was the big one. ‘Cheating’ on spotify was why I had to start over on my first day, because--and this was my most unsettling discovery--I am not good with silence. I was uncomfortable walking to class without music. I didn’t like showering without music blaring in the background. My car’s radio is broken, so I found myself singing showtunes to myself. Part of this is genuinely because I love having music constantly playing and motivating my day, but I think I have also conditioned myself to be extremely uncomfortable with silence, even when the world around me is not entirely ‘quiet’. I have a ton of theories as to why this is, but I only have so many characters. Picture 3: Kindle I have a Kindle, so it wasn’t so much that I gave up reading as it was that I gave up the audiobooks I listened to on my Kindle app. Going along with the discomfort with silence, this was also rough. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts constantly--it was disconcerting to be alone with my own thoughts. #anth101 #hanschu130

An update to my 28 day challenge. Things are going better, but still getting writer’s block. After I draw, I read comic books to see how poses are used for that type of work. Since I can’t have the reference in front of me while I draw, i imagine those images and create them using my creative twist. #hanschu130 #anth101 #anth101challenge3

My UnThing experiment is to give up Facebook, Snapchat, instagram, and Twitter for two days. After the 48 hours, I have learned a lot about myself. I realize that while I’m at school, I really on social media for the news and trends. On the first day, I found myself twiddling my thumbs a lot since I could not spend the time scrolling through the feeds of Facebook and Twitter. I have gained a sense of awareness in the fact that I’m more productive and able to get my work done without the use of the apps. I do not see the world or other people differently from this experiment. The main downside of this is that I can’t keep tabs on what my friends are doing. #hanschu130 #anth101 #anth101challenge5

For Challenge 5 I will be giving up social media for three days and I will attempt to text less and call more. Through all of these apps I think we lose a lot of genuine emotions and contact with people. I’m looking forward to see how big of a challenge this might be for me! #anth101 #hanschu130 #anth101challenge5

Re•cent: turning in your recycling and getting paid for it at a grocery store or at a center. I think that recycling will help save the earth and can help in reducing pollution. I think a big incentive for people these days and even giving them a few cents for their recycling can be a huge change in the world. My friends and I talked about this idea and they all agreed that it would be a good idea and would motivate them to recycle more. College kids drink quite a few drinks and cans and could probably make some good money for recycling. #anth101 #anth101challenge4 #hanschu130

Here’s a thumbs up to drinking more water👍🏼 besides having to know where the bathroom is ever few hours, being hydrated has made me feel so much better! I have a lot more energy, rely less on coffee, and have been eating healthier. I can now really tell the difference between when my body is properly hydrated and when I need to drink more water. Staying hydrated is harder than I thought only because when you get super busy you often forget to drink more water! #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

#anth101challenge3 update: I have a hella short attention span, especially when it comes to something that requires movement/exercise. @chadranthropology is super patient with me, and I did dance in high school and middle school so we're helping each other out. I'm mostly working on endurance and letting him lead at this point. On to week two! #anth101 #hanschu130 #28daychallenge

Update Number One: This is my first update for my 28 day challenge and I just wanted to express how well it’s been going! I admit that drinking this much water a day is a challenge and I have to remind myself every time I get something to drink to grab water and not something full of sugar. I have made it 7 days without a soda and it’s a huge accomplishment for myself, so into the next couple of weeks, I just need to remind myself that health is the goal! #hanschu130 #anth101

Week 2 of 28 Day Challenge We've gotten much better about making our movements look more natural. Finally starting to find some good East Coast Swing tempo music. Surprisingly, "Old Time Rock & Roll" works perfectly. I'm having a blast learning the new steps and I do feel like I'm improving. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

Seasonization: When the weather changes drastically during the day, usually during sunset, to the point the it feels like seasons are changing. Example: “Kansas must suffer the worst of seasonization because it feels like all four seasons occurred today in the weather.”; “It was 65 degrees before sunset, now it’s below freezing. This spring to winter like change can only be the cause of seasonization.” This photo was taken shortly after sunset and the weather was around 60 degrees in Kansas City, until it dropped straight into the 30’s. #hanschu130 #anth101challenge4 #anth101

My 28 day challenge is not as easy as I thought it was going to be. I am currently on page 70, but with all of my school work I have not read consistently every day. However today I read more pages than I would on a normal day in order to try to make up for some of that. This next week I am going to try to pick back up on reading every day! #anth101 #anthchallenge3 #hanschu130

The word I have created for the word weaving challenge is “instawarpedality.” Instawarpedality (n.) is a state of mind where your reality is skewed due to social media, mainly instagram. Scrolling through Instagram you see these pictures of everyone constantly going out and doing fun things and being with lots of people who are always looking their best. The photos are always worked on to look professionally edited. You’re constantly seeing the posts of models and celebrities. After seeing all of these things constantly, one starts to think that this is what reality actually is and that this is what their own life should look like. They begin to compare their life to others. #anth101 #anthchallenge4 #hanschu130

For my #28daychallenge I am going to start journaling. It is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I often think back to “what day was that?” Or “who were we with?” I want to be able to remember everything that I do in my life and enjoy all of the memories in the future. My grandmother has been keeping scrapbooks of my childhood and I think that journaling will be a good way to keep track of the memories associated with the photos she adds from College. I also think it will be a good way to destress and get my thoughts out in a positive and constructive way. #hanschu130 #anthropology101 #anthchallenge3

For my 28 day challenge, I have decided to cleanse my body by drinking 64 ounces of water a day! (Half a gallon) As someone who is pretty ashamed to say that my main liquid source is sugar content and soda, this challenge is also centering around ONLY drinking water for the next 28 days. I hope this opens my eyes to the benefits of good health, and starts me on a new track of physical focus! #anth101 #antho101challenge3 #hanschu130

I'm doing my 28 Day Challenge in partnership with my girlfriend, Madeline Wilson. I think doing this with a partner is an excellent way to ensure that we're both held more accountable. This is a skill we've both been wanting to learn for years, so we're excited to finally have an extra reason to try it. Today we worked on the the basic triple step (pictured) and the turn. It's a little strange right now, but I'm confident we can improve a lot in the next 28 days. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #hanschu130

#anth101challenge3-- I am learning how to swing dance with my boyfriend, Chadron! After some research, we decided that we want to learn East Coast swing. We would love to have some moves to show off at parties and weddings, and especially wanted to do something that would challenge us both individually and as a couple. We're dedicating around 2 hours a week to this, and will choose a YouTube video a week with different moves that fit the skill level we're trying to accomplish. This week is the basic step, with some turns thrown in. We're already struggling a little, tbh. #anth101 #hanschu130 #28daychallenge
