“... Mom went back to the doctor where they confirmed my worst fear.... stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer that was in both the colon and liver. After helping take care of my mom during her worst days, my passion to become a nurse grew even more.” Although this is not a picture of me in the role of nurse, I hope to be able to help others like my mom who are sick when I pursue my career as a nurse. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101carlie

“The leadoff hitter for Blue Valley hit a sharp grounder to my left. I took off, taking three steps, then dove. Sliding into the outfield grass I fielded the ball and threw it to first. I had just made a diving play. After doing this I now feel that I have gained respect from my team and earned the starting spot at second base for the rest of the season. At the end of the inning I went back into the dugout to everybody high fiving me and complimenting my play.” This is an exert from my hero story on one of the trials that I had to face. After a season ending injury my junior year, I came back my senior year with my teammates and coaches not respecting or trusting me to play. In my story, I focused on our most important game that season; playing our rival at Kauffman Stadium. I had many trials throughout the game and eventually became a hero by hitting in the go-ahead run to win the game. This one game has influenced my life through leadership and character, and has strived me to be a hero for any challenge given to me. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101bridget1030

#anth101 #anth101challenge9 #baileybunch101 My hero story is about my struggle with depression after the loss of my Papa. The story goes into depth about all of my trials and tribulations and how my relationship with God has become tremendously stronger. He has gotten me through all of the rough times where I just wanted to give up. After the death of my Papa my life started to go downhill. From the death of him to the death of my aunts and uncles, and to the death of my cousin by suicide. I didn’t know how to properly cope, I lost my way and I turned my back on God; for how could he take away the things that mean the most to me? After suffering with depression for over 5 years I decided I’d had enough. So I began writing, studying, and praying in God’s word. I know if it weren’t for God I would not be here today. His everlasting love has saved me, and he’s clearing out the dark clouds, so that I may see light. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

#anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101shyla Challenge 9: For the past two weeks, it has been our mission to equivocate our own life stories with that of a hero. Identifying the calls to adventure, the trials, temptations, risks, and rewards of the life journey and interpreting that in a grandiose way...in essence that's what this post represents. My nature is to keep moving through life, press through the pain, and dwell on what uplifts. That said, digging back through my life and thinking about it in a different, more thematic way was enlightening. Again, this post represents that mental journey. The potential for pain ought not be a barrier that keeps us from personal greatness. On the contrary, you cannot become great without it. The path of the hero is riddled with pain but that does not change the fact that they're the hero. Rise up. Fight on. Come back for more.

I’m not an artist, so I feel like this photo is a fantastic depiction of how I feel as I come to the freeing realization that I am the hero of my own story and I am anything but weak. “All my life, I’ve been afraid of so many things, and have lived with this toxic idea that I am weak because I feel this fear so deeply. However, I have learned that courage is not a lack of fear, but acknowledging it and continuing on anyway.” #anth101challenge9 #anth101carlie #anth101

The picture with words was what I wrote during my trials and tribulations period. I no longer feel this way. I wrote this for the assignment. I wrote thinking about when I was in that place: GUILT Guilt filled my every bone, my every brain cell. Why did I do what I knew was wrong... again and again and again? Why did I get into the situation in the first place? I know others forgive me. I know God forgives me and loves me just the same. But I don't forgive me. I no longer love me. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101morgan130

For #anth101challenge9 I wrote my hero story about me and my struggle with anxiety. In the story I wrote about how anxiety has made me believe lies about myself. It made me believe that I was worthless, that I’m a bother to everyone around me, and that no one truly loves me. But the story is also about how I have been able to fight against anxiety with the help of my super amazing friends who speak beautiful truths to me everyday and constantly reassure me. #anth101 #anth101morgan930 #herostory

For my Challenge 8, I decided to trace the journey of my newest top! This shirt is from Charlotte Russe in Topeka, Kansas and it was distributed from locations from all over the US. This shirt is said to be made in California and there has been many speculations over whether the environment they were made in was either legal or illegal. The apparent cost to the people making this was an average of $6.50 an hour, although this is speculated and never confirmed. Charlotte Russe has recently acknowledged the California Transparency Supply Chains Act and now claims the store “respect internationally recognized human rights standards.” This may imply that the clothes are no longer made in the U.S. The second picture is something I uploaded from my GOTR practice 5K! I was unable to contact anyone who had made my clothing, so I decided to try the water challenge and the girls were more than thrilled to watch me and learn all about the purpose of my project! Although I didn’t carry it for long, I definitely began to appreciate the people who do it every day. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #clancheyanne

I lived my life like I was waiting for it to end. The same fight every day. It was a noble fight, but I was tired. Then I got my diagnosis. Everything made sense. Then I had a choice to make. I could sit and feel sorry for myself, or I could get up and find my voice. My best friend in high school helped me get started. When I got to college, I met Ben. He wouldn't let me quit, because he's stubborn like me. I've faced major depression, panic attacks, generalized anxiety, and loss. My biggest fear is that everyone will leave me, because I'm not worth the trouble. Sometimes I really just want to lay down and get run over by everything. It would be easy to give up, to isolate myself, to accept just being miserable. But I want to be light. I want people to look at me and wonder "why does she always smile?" I want to reach people with my story. I think it's as much a part of me as I am of it. I woke up one morning and realized, I'm not scared anymore. Now to conquer the rest of the world. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101carlie

For challenge I’ll be tracing the true cost of this Red Jasper Tiger carving i bought online. I bought from a crystal miner and lapidary off of ebay. the man stated that all of the carvings were done in China/India. there’s no telling of the exact location where the red jasper ore was mined because it can be found commonly worldwide, however inportant deposits can be found in India, Russia, and Indonesia. the jasper was likely taken from one of those locations. Because of the related chance that it was produced in either China or India, i’ll attempt to empathize with the average worker from both countries. More than likely workingn in a small to medium sized space/factory working for less than out livable wage and potentially for longer hours. there is also the possibility it was done out of someone’s home with care and precision. With that said i took the option to go using only public water 2 weeks ago when my room’s water went out and i had no money in my bank account. i ate peanut butter for lunch and dinner for five nights. not fun #anth101 #anth101challenge8 @prof_easton

I decided to do Challenge 6 by sitting in the cigarette smokers spot (iconically dubbed the “smircle”) outside of Langdale. Me not being a cigarette smoker, I’ve never spent time interacting with this crowd or sitting in the vicinity. i joined one of my friends who smokes and sat in on the experience just to see what it is like. Not only was I surprised to find out that there were actually enjoyable conversations to be had, a couple times the people there mentioned how bad they were (i thought most didn’t care). As a non smoker i held beliefs that smokers were weird, eclectic, and depressing people who didn’t care about their health. in reality, everyone has vices one of there’s just happened to be cigarettes. I believe the stereotypes around cigarette smokers stem from the health problems they cause being blamed solely on their usage and not the industries supplying of them. In no eay shape or form do i support cigarette smoke, but i’m going to try to not mentally condemn and judge participants anymore. They’re regular people with problems, dreams, and responsibilities like all of us. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 @prof_easton

“The nurse had to insert a feeding tube into this tiny babies nose so he could eat. At first when the feeding tube was inserted the babies heart rate started to rise really fast and then fell extremely low, and all of sudden the machine was beeping very loudly. People were rushing into the room, as the baby was about to lose its heartbeat. I watched as they had to push the bed flat and start tiny baby compressions, then they put an oxygen mask on the baby.” #anth101morgan930 #anth101challenge9 #anth101

My Hero story: I sat on my best friend’s dock at her lake house in council grove and as we all watched the sunset, I felt the most euphoric feeling I’ve ever had. I was so confused. I’ve never been to the lake before, I was surrounded by people I had only just met, and I wasn’t a fan of drinking or country music. How could I be happy here? It was at that moment I realized that my happiness would never be the way it was before May. I would never be the same person I was back then. However, for the first time in my life, I found happiness everywhere I looked. It was at the Potts’ lake house in Council Grove. It was at my friends’ house on Fairview, where they had us over every weekend and treated me like I was the greatest human being they had ever known. It was in the kitchen in my apartment where my two best friends/ roommates danced to songs all night just to put a smile on my face when I was down. For the first time I realized that I wouldn’t just be happy anymore. I was radiant, euphoric, joyous. The amazing people in my life had opened my eyes to a new way of happiness, by letting me into their lives and showing me there was so much more than the happiness I had known. Would I consider myself a hero? Of course. But it’s easy to be a hero when you are lucky enough to see them every day. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #clancheyanne

For Challenge 9, I was challenged to see myself as a hero and write my life story as a hero story. I believe I am most myself when I go to work as a CNA. I call this my "hero work". When I become an RN, I hope to go on medical mission trips. The Lord has blessed me, and Luke 12:48 states, "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required." The trials I have been through and overcome in my earlier life make me a hero, and now that the Lord is blessing me, I am called to be a hero in a different way. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #keeleykluster101

I bought this necklace from a store “ten thousand villages”. I decided to just show a picture of it from the website so I could show information about it straight from the source as well. 1. a woman from the store “ ten thousand villages” 2. It will be boarded on a ship across the sea and goes through customs. This company has a truck that will pick it up and take it to the warehouse in Akron, Pennsylvania to be sorted by its own hired staff. 3. Communities in the developed world make these items and get to these stores in other countries. Then purchased from these stores give back and improve the lives of the makers. 4. Raw materials for the woven baskets that they make are grown and come from near the maker’s home. All materials for any products are either natural or recycled and local. 5. this is actually one of the fewer items that I have that has benefited more people rather than hurt. This company helps send children to school and put food on the table and provide safe homes in developing companies. Sales from products bought give back and go back directly to the makers. This company is “ethical at every step” #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #1130inspireanth101

“You don’t aim at a particular spot in the room because that’s where you will arrive. The whole point of dancing is the dance.” Sometimes I am utterly stumped by what my purpose in life is, but I try not to linger on the topic too long in fear of not making the most of each moment. We only have so much time on this planet and there is an endless amount of happiness waiting to be found!! Do not sit around and wait for the end of your journey, sometimes you gotta just improvise. for challenge 8 i was unable to find an item and track the true cost by tracing its journey backwards through the chain and talk to someone who may have helped produce it so i decided to challenge myself physically and carry the 5 gallons of water for a mile. this was not an easy task for me to accomplish. going into i thought it would be easy and i would be able to do it just fine with breaking a little sweat. i was wrong. i made it about 20 steps and i was already suffering. after experiencing what others do daily to make a living on less than $2/day. i’ve learned that having accessible water should not be taken for granted. #anth101 #anthchallenge8 #keeleykluster101

For Challenge 8, I focused on a bag I got as a hand-me-down from my mother. The bag is called EbenPak and has a map of Cambodia embroidered on the inside. It is a very nice bag which I proceeded to use until complete destruction. The bag is made here in the United States. The reason for the map on the inside of the bag is because the creator of the bag, an anthropologist doing work with youth in Cambodia found that many kids were not going to school because they couldn’t afford the supplies or the bag to carry it to class. Thus, the creator went back to america and now with every purchase of this bag, a bag full of school supplies is sent to Cambodia. #anth101challenge8 #anth101 #GSUanth2020S18

For Challenge 6, I went to mass with my family. I was raised Roman Catholic but haven’t been to church in many years. The church was something I found to be a large burden on my life, given the history of the Church and what the leaders of the religion have said about the queer community I was very disillusioned with the religion. I also am not a spiritual person and personally identify as atheist. Going back to church, a place I have actively avoided for many years was weird. The community of people has barely changed at all, although my personal favorite priest had left and been replaced with a man most of the church body don’t like. Being back in that space wasn’t fun for me. The church is a sore spot for me and being back brought forward a lot of unresolved issues I have with the religion and it’s feelings about my community. I would have preferred to stay away. Looking at church from another perspective: that of the church goers and their ability to connect with God was interesting. I always found my understanding of God in hymns and music when I had that spirituality and listening to the traditional choral music reverberating off the walls was in itself a religious experience. #anth101challegenge6 #anth101 #GSUanth2020S18

There have been many things that college has taught me so far. One of them has been time management. When I was a freshman, I always stressed so much about important assignments and tests. But after learning that I can always do work ahead of time, I haven’t been as stressed as before. Also, college itself is a massive test with many trials. Some of the trials are the classes, and classes test you on what you have learned and on what you haven't. Thus, since starting college, I’ve had to study long hours, missed sleep, and other things. One of my vast temptations is junk food, especially after long study hours. Or going out instead of getting more work completed. But I always tend to ignore them, because I know that my health and grades are necessary for me to meet my goals. Dedication and consistency are tremendous skills that I have that have led me to be the student that I am today. My biggest fear from college would be to fail, but I’ve learned that I don’t have to be perfect and since I am human, I can make mistakes. And that I am my own competition, thus, I don’t have to compare my achievements and failures to anyone else. Individually, we all experience life by going through ups and downs. excerpt of my story Title: Intermission ( because I am still in the process of growing and becoming) “Once upon a time, a girl who many people doubted decided that she would become something greater. This girl was tired of settling for less, and so she wanted to become something bigger, something that would help her and her family succeed. From that, she decided to take on a laborious journey, a journey that no one in her family had been before. This journey, although easy to some, was nothing easy for this girl. This girl had to dig gold, work long hours, build many bridges, all so she can go on this journey. A journey that would not be any easier”. #agnesscottant101s18 #anth101challenge9 #anth101 @prof_easton

After not watching tv for a week it has allowed me to open my mind and have conversations with people and delve into deep thought that I usually drone out with tv. So for this challenge I interviewed my stepdad. He and I have had many differences for years and it made it difficult in a way to truly have much to bond over. But we discovered that we both were artists, and our differences made us view each other in positive ways. I was able to confess a personal secret of mine and he didn’t reject my difference. We are now closer than ever and have found a bond as we have come to understand each other better. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #kapsclan

For Challenge 9 I didnt know what to post as a picture for being a hero. but here is me after a battle with a big beast like in my story. we also have to post a part of our hero story and here is the end of mine. The boy now a man has still been on alert for its reawakening. Until that day comes he has been waiting studying and strengthen himself to never let that beast best him again. For the will to live and the will to carry on are too strong, there is too much to do and experience to be left behind and with that the boy said “Live Free or Die”. #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #Herostory #myherostory #keeleykluster101

A little background about myself is that I was a little scared to come to college and when I first got here I joined way too many clubs and organizations. Needless to say I was a little overwhelmed and I spread myself too thin. I have learned since then that I have to take each day one at a time and I haven’t reached the goal of knowing everything about how to handle college but I really don’t think anyone does. In the end, I want to see myself as a less stressed person who is well balanced in all aspects of my life. This is why I drew myself as a super hero and as a college expert because I want to strive to be my best self in the next four years at Kansas State #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #keeleykluster101

I’m a bit of a minimalist; but this is a snow hat that I purchased in Niagara Falls, Canada when I was 12 years old. I picked it up at a mom and pop retailer along the river. Every item in the shop was uniquely handmade by owner and family... I imagine that the cotton came from a Canadian farm, or perhaps Uzbekistan. This hat is one of a kind and that’s why I love it so much... While searching for the retailer, I hit a dead end. The shop and its owners are no longer there — I hope they’re still making warm hats and scarves! @prof_easton #gsuanth2020s18 #challenge8 #anth101 #anth101challenge6

#anth101 #anth101jack #anth101challenge8 Step 1 What is it? It is a bottle of Aquafina water I bought from the vending machine in the engineering building. Aquafina is the largest bottle manufacturer in the United States, holding 13.4% of the market according to Wikipedia. How did it get to the place of sale? (Distribution) The water bottles are transported by semi distribution to their respective store or location of sale in the usual case. Production Aquafina is owned by Pepsico. Aquafina has 40 purification plants in the United States and Canada where they produce the water. I could not find any information at all about where the water bottle was manufactured unfortunately. In the news recently, http://www.collective-evolution.com/2016/01/25/pepsico-finally-comes-clean-and-admits-the-truth-about-their-bottled-water/, is that Aquafina just purifies standard tap water. This means that it’s not from the moutains or any special source. Where do the raw materials come from? The main raw materials for water bottles are plastics. Therefore, they are made in a manufacturing plant. The main material PET, made from petroleum hydrocarbons. After digging a little deeper, I discovered that 90% of the cost of making bottled water comes from making the bottle itself. It takes abot ¼ of the bottle filled with oil (as equivalency) to turn a water bottle from oil into plastic. There are then 29 billion bottles purchased every year in the US. So that is abot 17 million barrels of crude oil needed per year to facilitate the bottled water industry. That oil comes from many different places including different continents. https://mightynest.com/articles/making-a-plastic-water-bottle CONTINUED IN COMMENTS

This item was sold to me buy one of the biggest stores across the US, Old Navy. A lot of the items of clothing in the store seem to be made in Indonesia or Vietnam, mostly. These items possibly got to Old Navy from distributors who facilitated the shipping of these items across the world. The item was created by locals of these countries and the raw materials were also probably extracted locally. Sadly, the costs to the people and the environment along this journey would not be a positive one. Samiha Ross, a rising junior here at Agnes has lived in and grown up in Indonesia for a few years and has some insight on the labor industry there and in other countries. Her insight in the video attempts at demonstrating just how much our connections to other people in the world are hidden from us. Thanks @samihaross ! This crochet blanket isn’t typically something I would go and purchase for myself, in fact it was a Christmas gift given from a close friend. Ironically, it’s one of my favorite possessions and has gotten me through this incredibly long winter 😩. In order to trace back the blanket through the commodity chain, i first asked my friend where she purchased it. She explained how she picked it up from a really nifty boutique on Etsy.com. Etsy is a really convenient online shop where people can sell their handmade items worldwide! I was able to trace the blanket back to a cutesy shop called ‘MadeBySusie4U’. Luckily, Etsy has a really cool way to communicate with shop owners and I utilized this system to introduce myself to Susie and ask a few questions. In our conversation, she was willing to explain where she buys her knitting yarn. She purchases high quality knitting yarn from a European seller (this must be why the blanket is so soft), she was also generous enough to give me their contact. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach them. In all, the depth and complexity behind the things that I own are remarkable. To me, it was just a blanket. But the number of places and people it has traveled in absolutely interesting, the process of producing and delivering goods, especially handmade is a very extraordinary one. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #agnesscottant101s18 @prof_easton

It was difficult for me to trace the origin back to where my a piece of my clothing was produced so I decided to do spend Sunday with no electricity/water and ONLY $2 to spend. Only having $2 to spend was extremely difficult, especially when it came down to what I wanted to eat for the day. I went to the grocery store and the cheapest item I could find for food were just processed snacks or just a single fruit which i know would not fill me up. I decided to only eat what I already had in the house. Another difficulty arose when I could not use electricity to cook my food. I only ate fruits that day. LOL. I was able to not use the shower the whole day since I was not doing anything that day but i imagined it would have been extremely difficult for if I had to go to work. This challenge opened up my eyes to the hardships that people globally go through. The fact that they have to work 2x as hard as anyone else and have nothing to compensate and on the brink of poverty makes me extremely sad and grateful at the same time. You never really realize how something as simple as water play a crucial part in everyday life. I admit that I get carried away and take it for granted. #gsuanth2020s18 @prof_easton #anth101 #anth101challenge8

Bombas socks are an amazing brand of socks with a purpose. With every pair of socks that are bought, a pair is donated to a shelter in need. I thought this was a great story and wanted to know more about how my socks were made. I tried my best to track down everything and got stuck in china. This does make sense that the socks are mass produced in china because they have to be made at such a low price that they can donate a pair as well. My socks are comfortable and i dont know what i would do without them. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #carlyfri1030

My item is a wool carpet that I bought while traveling in Morocco. A merchant in Chefchaouen, Morocco sold it to me. The distribution is different because it is not mass produced, and handmade by local women in the city. The raw materials used to make these carpets can be made from wool, cactus silk, and camel hair. These materials were gathered through natural resources nearby. The cost to the people is the amount of labor needed, and the cost to the environment are the resources used. To increase my understanding of how the citizens make their living I decided to do a fast for one day. I had no food and just allowed myself to have water. For some families this is their only source of income, and if they don’t make enough money for that day they may not be able to eat. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #AgnesScottANT101S18 @prof_easton

When I went abroad I bought a pound of coffee from El Jibaro Coffee Lab, and I was able to learn the story of the product I bought, which I will say is the best coffee I've ever had! El Jibaro Coffee Lab is a small business in Cali, Colombia that goes beyond the coffee roasting process, and helps to shed light on the experiences of the Colombian coffee farmers, who were impacted by the Colombian Conflict. The business works directly with passionate coffee farmers, committed to the production and careful selection of the best coffee beans that express their best profile in the cup. The coffee beans used to make my cup of coffee this morning come from the Nasa, a marginalized indigenous group that was affectef by the armed conflict. Through this business, Camilo Mejía , owner of the business, is providing economic opportunities for these people. After learning about the origins of my product, I felt privileged to be having a cup of coffee knowing that the people who collected these beans are people who are delivering the best product for me and that they are trying to move on from their harsh past. It was an honor to meet Cam and to know the background of his business. #anth101challenege8 nge8 #agnesscottant101s18 @prof_easton #anth101

#anth101challenge8 #agnesscottant101s18 @prof_easton #anth101 Om my journey to Granada I bought this teapot. Southern Spain is full of its glorious Islamic past. I bought this teapot made from silver from a Moroccan in one of the many Moroccan stores in the Albaicin. The teapot cost 8 euros and when I looked at the price of a similar one on Amazon the starting price was 35 dollars and higher. This teapot was imported by the Moroccan seller from his homeland to Spain. Then I bought it and brought it to the States. Although I did not find out exactly this teapot came from I found another company: Marrakech. They hand make their teapots from metal in Morocco and export them. The cost to the people was the risk of leaving their country and culture behind be for Europe. But they kept that culture through selling it to tourists and travelers. Knowing that this teapot came from immigrants makes me appreciate it as a beauty of a great culture that I will try to honor not just another souvenir. #humansofourstuff

for my #anth101challenge9 i decided to find out where my lokai bracelet came from. i looked at their story on their website and found that inside the white bead on the bracelet is full of water from Mount Everest and the black bead is full of mud from the Dead Sea. after further investigation i found that all on the materials in the 2.0 bracelet, including the pouches and care cards the bracelets come with are made from recycled materials. however the normal bracelet that i had was made mostly from silicone. my next step was to try and find where these materials came from and how they were made. on the tag it says the bracelet is made in china but distributed in New York. the distribution center had no information online, so i decided to send an email to the company asking if they could give me more information about where their materials came from, but unfortunately I have not made any progress yet. #anth101 #carlyfri1030

For my challenge 8 I chose to live a day with just 2$. For me this was probably the hardest thing to do. I live in an area where stores are relatively close so I can walk to them, so being able to find public water and restroom wasn’t too hard but trying not to drink a lot of liquids so I wouldn’t have to make too many trips to a restroom. I chose to buy a fruit since it’s the most nourishing thing that I could buy with 2$, this experience made me appreciate all the commodities that us Americans have that others in other parts of the world do not have. #Repost @anth101zack #anth101bestofchallenge8 ・・・ For challenge 8 I was able to, in a roundabout way, find the station that produced the wool for the shirt I was wearing. I *love* my merino wool t shirts and Icebreaker is the name in the game of merino apparel (other than smartwool). I just so happened to check the tags and noticed this "baacode." The baacode is a specific code that used to be able to trace one's garment back to the station it was made at, but this system has gone by the wayside as Icebreaker has expanded further and found alternate ways to communicate transparency. Nevertheless, he persisted. With the help of my dad being the previous owner of this shirt and obsessive about the baacode, as well as the wayback machine, I was able to find that this shirt was produced originally at the Muller Station in New Zealand! As it turns out, they have a Facebook page so I shot them a quick little message. For challenge 8, i decided to try to trace where my clothes come from! So i chose my jeans from American Eagle! American eagle is based out of Pittsburgh, PA. The materials of the jeans were made in china. This was product was sold in the mall in Overland Park, ks. The clothing comes in shipments in semi-trucks. The production of the product is done in the factories in PA. The extraction of the jeans comes from China. The costs to the people were probably work labor and maybe time of production. Now I couldnt come in contact for step 2 of this process because American Eagle is nation wide and tracing it back to China, there was no direct information leading me to a specific producer in China. So as an alternate, i lived on $2 a day. I waited to do this challenge because living in the dorms makes it a little easier to get by. So, I went home this past weekend and did this challenge! I live in the suburbs of olathe, ks. So, walking to the closest bathrooms would be the closest walmart or gas station. Using $2 for food could get me something at a fast food restaurant or some snack at the gas station, but nothing that would or should meet nutritional needs. This was definitely a challenge for me, but I did get lots of exercise. Also, I didnt realize how much i relied on electricity. My phone was almost completely dead by midday and theres wasnt much entertainment for me. It was definitely a different lifestyle than i am used too!! #anth101 #anth101bridget1030 #anth101challenge8

If you look at the shoes people wear on a daily basis you can see that many people are either wearing Nikes, Adidas, New Balance, or some other brand of shoe. Nike is the largest shoe company in the world and they make these shoes by outsourcing the jobs to countries that have cheaper labor. My very own Nike Air Max’s that I bought from Dick’s Sporting Goods cost me a pretty penny. Most people and even I would say that it was worth the money. Nike distributed their shoes to other big sporting goods stores. The Nike Air Max’s that I own were made in Vietnam were the minimum wage is seventy-three cents per hour in US dollars. This is very common throughout the developing world as they don’t yet have the means to afford a larger minimum wage. The main materials that are used in the making of Nike shoes is EVA or ethylene-vinyl acetate which is a copolymer and cotton is also used in the making of Nike shoes. EVA is produced in China and is seen as one of the more sustainable products and Nike get their cotton from China, India, Turkey, and the United States. The environmental impacts from EVA is that it releases fugitive emissions into the air, water, and massive energy consumption. Also, the improper throwing away of EVA is a problem. In the end I was not able to find someone from Vietnam that knows about the production of Nike shoes which disappointed me. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101morgan930

I chose to put myself in the other’s shoes by carrying a five gallon water jug one mile. The fact that people around the world have to do this everyday simply to have water is crazy to me. We are blessed to have running, clean water at our disposal. I also tracked a t shirt I bought at Walmart. Walmart has its own distribution system so Walmart is also how it got to the store. The label is starting to fade and the signature gold spade has tarnished. Guess it’s time for a new wallet? But where did this, which I carry with me everywhere, first come from? For #anthchallenge8 I decided to find out. I live chatted with two kate spade representatives, tried to get in contact with Corporate Client Relations multiple times, and constantly ended up at the same ethical sourcing policy page listing all of the places where they DON’T do business due to unethical practices. I still came up short of where this wallet was made!! I was given vague answers as to where materials came from and a lot of confusing findings such as sources saying they do not purchase hides from China... yet most of their purchased materials come from China? I thought this was a high quality brand and would be made somewhere in Europe or America, but the reality is a lot of products are made in China nowadays. Or at the least were in China at some point during their production! Another interesting road block I encountered was Li & Fung. It is a global supply chain management company based in Hong Kong, largely servicing US and EU brands, Kate Spade included. The fashion industry has gotten so big, it has created an entire other industry to manage the manufacturing of products! When one product requires it to be shipped around the world to simply be completed, I can see the need for this. However, when a company such as Kate Spade uses another company to monitor their product, are they really in charge of their own ethics anymore? #carlyfri1030 #anth101

So I decided to do research over my New Balance shoe. When I researched the company I found out a quarter of the shoes New Balance sells in Ameifa are actually made in 5 New England factories. On the tag on my shoe however it said Vietnam, where they in fact get most of the materials for their shoes. When I called them they couldn't track my shoe so I assume it was made and assembled overseas. #anth101 #carlyfri1030 #WhereIsMyThingMade

This week I wanted to figure out where my flute came from. It is a Pearl Flute. I looked on the company’s website to find that their flutes are made in Taiwan and Japan. They have a distribution center here in the United States in Nashville. I bought it from an individual through my teacher at the time, so I’m not sure what store it came from, but there is a dealer in Wichita. I have contacted the company with the serial number and model and they are getting in touch with the factories to see if it was made in Taiwan or Japan! #anth101 #challenge8 #carlyfri1030

I wasn’t able to find out much regarding my favorite pair of shoes from JustFab other than they came from a factory in California, where I was then shut down very quickly by a member of their company. So, I decided to live off of two dollars on Wednesday. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I didn’t eat much because I didn’t want to spend all my money at once, and when I did eat I made a PB&J. It was also really really difficult to not use electricity or running water, and I ended up going to bed super early because I couldn’t study without light or watch netflix or anything. Not having running water was also extremely challenging-I was so thirsty all day and it was weird having to leave my house to go to the bathroom. This definitely gave me a new appreciation for everything that I have and made me realize just how important it is that we understand and appreciate all that the factory workers go through. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #1130inspireanth101

For this week’s challenge, I filled up a large bucket with water and tried carrying it around my neighborhood. The purpose of this challenge was to better understand what like is like for people in developing countries who have to go to great lengths to obtain basic necessities like clean water. Doing this challenge made me think more about just how different my life is from that of someone growing up in a third world country, and it made me more aware of how much effort many people around the globe are forced to put in simply to survive. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #carlyfri1030

For my #anth101challenge8 I tried to figure out a little more about my joggers from American Eagle. I tried really hard to find out from someone exactly where the materials are from but either they wouldn’t know or they would direct me to their AEBetterWorld pdf file. I looked at the file and it has a lot of content on how they try to help the world, but the closest thing I could find about their products were that American Eagle works with factories in Cambodia, China, Vietnam, Haiti, and Indonesia. I wish o could have figured out more and I am going to try again to see if I can get a better answer than this file. Overall, I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get anywhere but happy that I could check out this book by AE. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #carlyfri1030

When it came to finding out where this was actually made I had a tough time. I bought these a while ago online but when I reached out to them I could not get answers. I decided to just do some research and see that New Balance prides themselves in making their products in America. However I decided to do research on this. Many of their products do have manufacturing that takes place in America but they still get a lot of the material from China. They quoted it as 70% is “Made in America” which I found interesting. The manufacturing that did take place in America takes place in the Northeast and supplies many jobs for Americans. With that being said, I did fail trying to find a person so on Friday I plan on living off of $2 to empathize. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #carlyfri1030

Living on $2 yesterday was rough. I caught a ride to Walmart to buy 1/4 pound of turkey and ate that during the day. Without electricity and running water wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. This challenge however made have a lot of empathy for the poor people in the world and I don’t think I could live like that everyday. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101bridget1030

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to talk to anyone who actually makes different pieces for the water bottles. While I was on the phone with worker from Camelbak, she was able to tell me where some of the ideas are made. The stainless steel and plastic water bottle comes from China. The caps for each water bottle also comes from China. The backpacks come from the Philippines. There was another idea that comes from Mexico but she did not which idea it was. Since I failed at talking to someone who makes the product. I tried to live on $2 a day without using electricity or running water. I failed at that as well. So basically for this challenge I failed. #anth101challenge8 #carlyfri1030 #anth101

This challenge was very eye opening for me. I was able to track the production of my boots pretty far, however i was unable to find a person to speak with from the country that the materials were made in. So for the second part of the challenge i decided to live on a 2 dollar food budget and no electricity or running water for a day. This is why i used a black picture for this challenge because this is how my mind felt when i realized i couldn’t turn on a light or even use my restroom in my room, and that instead i had to walk to the rec to do so. All in all, this challenge changed my mindset and i feel for those who aren’t as privileged as me. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101kaylee930

I had a blast getting to know my other! After our talk we realized we didn’t actually have much that we disagreed on. Our biggest difference was that she wants to live in Miami in the future and I want to live in the country in Texas! #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #carlyfri1030 #otherencounters

I met this girl when I moved into my new place this semester. Little did I know that we were going to be so different, but it worked out very well. I wasn’t expecting us to be different because we grew up around the same town. However, I grew up in the city and she grew up on land. With that being said our personalities are very different you think we would have grown up in the others town. While I’m more of a backwoods country gal and she is the city girl, we got caught up on a conversation about hunting. “Hunting to me just seems very wrong. I do not understand how you can go shoot an animal for fun.” I do not see it that way. I see it as helping with agriculture by lessening over grazing and also keeping a healthy balance of protein in our society. We couldn’t understand where the other was coming from. But to say the least I got an outside opinion on how others believe my activities are. #anth101kaylee930 #anth101 #anth101challenge7

I purchased these Adidas shoes in Kansas City at DSW in Overland Park. Adidas was founded and headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany. 68% of the products are made in Asia (China,  Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia and India), 20% are made in the Americas (United States, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and Mexico), and lastly 12% are made in Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain and South Africa. Materials used are recycled polyester, recycled rubber, organic cotton, "Better Cotton", Polylactic Acid (PLA), TENCEL® (a fibre made from wood pulp), and non-mulesed wool for apparel and leather. Does not use materials from any endangered or threatened species. Does not use leathers from animals that have been inhumanely treated. Adidas has a set of requirements for “workplace” standards which is supposed to set the standards for health and safety among the workers. They use risk mapping, such as checking factories. Agreed after factory collapse incident in 2012 in Bangladesh to make working conditions better and prevent future events like this. Although they say there are better working conditions, I am still a little sketched about what that really means. I learned most of this off the Adidas website and from looking at the tag on my shoe. Since I could not find someone who actually produced this shoe, I chose to try and carry water for 1 mile. I had to stop often and realized how hard it would be to do this everyday. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #1130inspireanth101

For challenge 8 i gave up electricity. The hardest part to me was not being able to use my car. I had to figure out a way to get to campus and how to get around with out it. Giving up lights in my house was kind of easy because i like the dark but it was so hard not to use the water as well. #anth101 #anthchallenge8

So i decided to research where the shirt i work for work came from. Its just a t-shirt and it was made in china. I couldn't find the exact place my shirt came from but i did some reading on about how the process goes. Its starts with the growing of the cotton all the way to the making of the clothes. Its multiple steps and they all happen in places where the wages are not fair by our standards. Interestingly, the jobs involved once the finished product makes it to the states all make a lot more money because it is warehouse jobs and truck drivers. #anth101 #anth101kaylee930 #anth101challenge8

I bought a suit at JCPenney's that was "Made in Vietnam." I thought it would be fun to try to track down the actual person who made it and learn more about their life. Amazing adventure and I learned so much. Video coming soon! #anth101 #anth101challenge8

Challenge 8: This is a tortilla warmer. It was given to me by my grandmother, who purchased it in México. I believe that it was sold for $5-$10 which equals to 91.20- 182.41 Mexican pesos. Interestingly, it was made from candy wrappers, wood, and paper (as far as I know). My grandmother bought it inside a jail in Mexico, in where the inmates Craft this tortilla warmers to make some profits (as long as police officers or other inmates do not steal their money). The inmates use the money they earn to buy snacks while they then use to make this elaborate craft. As far as the materials they use, they are not raw but instead produced products. I think the cost of the people and environment along this journey traces back to where the candies are made, imported to Mexico, sold in prison to be sold by prisoners. I really can’t ask the person to take a picture or to meet them because they are in a different country. And I would preferably not get associated. But I thought It was interesting to see how this tortilla warmer landed on my hands. And surprisingly, it makes a perfect tortilla warmer which could last for years. #anth101challenge8 #agnesscottant101s18 @prof_easton #anth101

For challenge seven we went to an Islamic school in Austin called the Austin Peace Academy. It was an amazing experience that opened my eyes. I learned that even if you are an open minded person, you still draw a line between " you and them" And it takes actually meeting people that are different than you to truly realize that you are both one and the same. I have taken so much from this experience, some new friends, a new look on the world, and a want to strengthen my relationships with my family. Talk to the people you don't understand, learn about the world around you, it's a beautiful place full of beautiful people. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #kapsclan

For challenge 8 I was told to try to trace back something I own to thr actual person who made it. Unfortunately this is extremely difficult and resulted in failure so I resorted to one of the alternative options. The option I chose was spending a day using only $2 as well as not using electricity or running water. Now technically not using electricity isn't really possible for me as I live in the basement of a dorm and would not be able to see otherwise but other than using the lights to leave the building, I managed to pull it off. I spent the day particularity hungery. Water wasn't much of an issue as we are allowed to use public water and living on campus means an abundance of water fountains. Yet, when it came to food it was a struggle. I bought some chips from the gas station and carried them with me for most of the day. I had to force myself not to eat them all at once so I could ration them throughout the day. I found myself constantly hungry and completely unsatisfied. Overall it was generally and unpleasant experience and I cannot imagine having to live on the kind of money for any extended period of time. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101kaylee230
