This class (among other things) has reminded me how it feels to be happy, inspired, and hopeful. I have various goals for my future and contribution to the world, but out of everything, I hope to be happy and remember how great it feels to laugh when seems like no one is watching. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge10

This is the final challenge for anth101 and I am so sad about it. This class has opened me up to the world itself and how it really is outside of my little bubble in Salina. I have realized that change has to start with yourself as an individual which is why I have decided to start living a different lifestyle to lessen my waste as an individual. I will forever be thankful for this class and all it has taught me. By far my favorite class. If you have a chance check out anth101.com! It will change your life. #anth101 #anth101challenge10 #anth101shyla

For my final Instagram post in this course, I’m posting the same picture that I posted for my introduction post. While this is the same picture, the person in it has completely changed. I never imagined the impact that this course would have on the way I think, feel, and see the world around me. Because of this course I can confidently graduate and go into the world as someone who believes in their power to make the world. This course has been a journey full of twists and turns, but I’ve loved sharing it with everyone in my class. I wish you all the best of luck! #anth101shyla #anth101challenge10 #anth101

#anth101 #anth101challenge10 #anth101shyla We've reached the end. I had no idea this class would require so much effort but also have such an impact on my daily life. Each lesson introduced another angle of critical thinking about important topics and issues. Many of these challenges took me out of my comfort zone and saw me doing things I wouldn't ordinarily. However, out in the unknown is where you grow and discover more about who you are. Undeniably, this has been an unforgettable adventure that has changed me and the way I think for good.

I didn’t have high expectations going into this class at the beginning of this semester. Anthropology has always been sort of a confusing topic in my mind, but after going through the lessons and challenging myself in many ways, I learned quite a lot about myself and figured out how to move forward in the future. I gained more than I ever thought I would ever gain from a class, and that’s a pretty cool feeling. #anth101challenge10 #anth101shyla #anth101

Challenge 10 Manifesto: One if my core goals for myself is to love everything around me; the people, environment and the fulfillment of ideas. My family visits a little island in Mexico regularly, that is severally struck by poverty and homelessness. This small island is absolutely beautiful, but tourist don’t seem to care about the people that actually live there. My family and I have visited this island three times and have made so many friends, participated in cleanups and have dove into the culture that this little community has created. This story has created the theme from my manifesto and my core goals are driven by the lessons I have learned throughout my trips to the island. #anth101 #anth101challenge10 #anth101shyla

Growing up i loved being outdoors and doing anything outside i was very family oriented and i lived a peaceful life until i was headed into 7th grade and my parents got a divorce and it hit my sister and i pretty hard. At that moment i had to put my own desires to the side and try to help my sister through the seemingly never ending situation. I was called to be her rock, her guide and the best brother i could be. Throughout those early middle school years i had several mentors but the could that stick out was my football and wrestling coach, Coach Parks. Whatever life threw at that man he places his problems in the hands of the Lord and let him help sort it out. There was many trials to get to where we are. The splitting of our family, feeling like we did something wrong and even the test of having to chose which parents house to attend certain holidays on without making the other feel unloved. The biggest fear i had was losing the family that i felt slipping through my fingers. There was tons of temptations as far as drinking, partying, the typical high school scene as we grew up but i had to resist as well as i could in order to be there for he people that still struggled i was also tempted by one of my family members continuously throwing money at me to try to buy my love and what not but in all reality the ultimate boon was ultimately giving my life to Christ and helping my sister to see that light instead of us trying to do all this on our own,

this is me as a part of my hero story. while my greatest attributes are my empathy (my big heart) and my good ideas, I tend to cage these in and stay quiet because of my introverted personality. In other words, I think “big” but act on a smaller scale. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge9

I drew this little picture of “hero me” after completing my hero story. This assignment was extremely challenging for me because it required a deep reflection of aspects in my life that I usually ignore. This challenge made me realize that even though my life isn’t exactly on the path that I’d planned, it’s still a pretty good path that I can enjoy. #anth101shyla #anth101challenge9

My Hero Story: "It's getting easier because I can now say I have enrolled in my last 4 classes for my degree. I have a graduation date which will be in December of this year, right before my birthday. This gives me a glimmer of hope but the ugliness still wins out most of the time. I still fight this dragon and am fighting it now as I write this paper. The problem is that the dragon is in my own mind and I find it very difficult to overcome my own fears, sadness, and failures. To find a happy place to make it through the day. I'm not a hero in the typical hero story. I'm not trying to save the world, not trying to save a city, not even trying to save my own family. I'm just trying to save me." #anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101shyla #yesjaitsanotherchallenge

#anth101 #anth101challenge9 #anth101shyla Challenge 9: For the past two weeks, it has been our mission to equivocate our own life stories with that of a hero. Identifying the calls to adventure, the trials, temptations, risks, and rewards of the life journey and interpreting that in a grandiose way...in essence that's what this post represents. My nature is to keep moving through life, press through the pain, and dwell on what uplifts. That said, digging back through my life and thinking about it in a different, more thematic way was enlightening. Again, this post represents that mental journey. The potential for pain ought not be a barrier that keeps us from personal greatness. On the contrary, you cannot become great without it. The path of the hero is riddled with pain but that does not change the fact that they're the hero. Rise up. Fight on. Come back for more.

We drifted into a deep conversation about police brutality and gun violence, particularly the recent gun reform movement. As a former US Marine, the movement angers him while I support it. Surprisingly, our conversation went really well. We had a civil conversation and each of us actually left the conversation with a better understanding of the other #anth101 #anth101shyla

He has lived a full lifetime, and in many ways I’m just beginning mine. In the time I spent with him, he spoke many words of wisdom. Despite the many trials he’s faced, such as his wife passing away and some health issues, he kept telling me that he had no reason to complain because he’s been blessed in so many ways. #Repost @kellyfinsta32 #anth101bestofchallenge8 ・・・ For Challenge 8, I started by contacting the company who made my favorite necklace. They were not able to give me much information at all and were more focused on making me a partner/sponsor in the company. Because I wasn’t able to get very far, I decided to talk to someone from a different country. This is Zhang Ke. He is from China and has been in the US for 8 years. For the 1 year he worked in China, he worked in a pharmaceutical company. He explained that the labor laws are strictly enforced, but they do have long hours which are compensated. His father is a policeman and his mother is a secretary. He said he was blessed to have been in a company that didn’t operate like the difficult factories. He was very glad that China’s labor laws somewhat resembled America’s. I learned a lot through chatting with Zhang and definitely have a different outlook on the workforce in China. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101shyla

#anth101bestofchallenge6 #Repost @nataliecooper_anth101 ・・・ this week I spent some time with some members of the improv troupe to get out of my comfort zone. I’ve been to a few of their shows to support my friend, but I have never participated in any of their activities. I’ve never liked audiences or putting myself out there, but my friend had been trying to get me to go to an improv workshop and I figured that this would be a great opportunity to challenge myself. I ended up loving how free-spirited the members of the troupe were and enjoyed trying something new. I had always believed that I would never be able to present myself in such a manner, but that was a “real”ity I had created in my mind and blocked myself off from attempting. I am a Christian, but I really haven’t invested much into my faith until the past year, and all of the churches I’ve been to while I’ve been in Manhattan have been very non traditional, nondenominational churches. #anth101bestofchallenge4 #Repost @millaranthro ・・・ For my challenge this week, I made the word "Honparent", which is a combination of the words Honest and Transparent. This word goes along with our lesson this week because it is about saying what you mean. Honparent is about being honest and visible with the people around you and not putting up a farce or making excuses. If you are honparent with the people around you, a mutual respect and trust will grow. Instead of saying, "Oh, I have to study tonight" as an excuse when someone asks you to hang out, the Honparent thing to say would be, "Thank you so much for the invite, but I think I'm going to stay in tonight and spend some time relaxing and unwinding by myself." I am a classic example of making excuses, telling white lies, and avoiding people to get out of things or to try and not send the wrong message. These actions only make me feel terrible and hurt my relationships. By being honparent, your relationships will be strengthened because you are building trust and you are letting people know the true you. #anth101challenge4 #anth101shyla #anth101

I did my challenge 8 on Nepal bracelets. It is an organization where the women of Nepal make these bracelets and get 70% of the profits. So after learning about the clothes industry I wanted to learn more about what they actually did. There is actually a website that explains how they get the beads, some women, and how they sustain the business. So I was pleasantly surprised. I tired to contact one of the women but it was a fail. So instead I lived on two dollars a day, little electricity and no water except for brushing my teeth. I found how much a simple fan I sleep with every night and a shower is a privilege. I truly want to be able to live like Gandhi. Because his life is inspirational!

For my challenge 8 i tried to get a hold of the people who made this unique ornament that my aunt gave me. My aunt got this ornament from a cute store she found in Nebraska. After some phone calls to the company, i discovered that it was assembled in Haiti. The point of the ornaments are to help those who are in poverty, rise out of their financial status and provide for their families. I talked to a girl, who was unable to provide a name, that was trying to send her kids to school. Because of the ornaments she had been selling, she was now able to do so. Both he and her husband work at “AP” also known as a company known as the Apparent project. The beads were at little to no cost for the women because of the fundraiser they put on. The ornament is made out of plastic beads and string that i believe had little harm to the environment. It was devastating to learn about the lifestyle these Haitians come from and what there goals are. We take for granted what we have too much. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge8

After being unsuccessful in finding someone who was involved in the making of a Royals beanie, I attempted to live off $2 for a day without electricity and running water. This opened my eyes to the terrible conditions many workers globally go through because of how little they get paid. Trying to find food that was under $2 yet still substantial enough to provide my body energy was so difficult. I ended up with an apple, a banana, and some discount bread, which was not super filling. I never realized how much i take running water for granted until I tried this challenge. Walmart provided a bathroom and some water when I walked to buy my food as well as a gas station down the road. Trying to fill my time without using technology since I did not have the money to charge it was interesting. I spent a lot of time reading and playing cards with some friends while it was light outside, but once it got dark all I did was share stories with my friends and sleep because it was hard to see. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge8

So this is my favorite T-shirt at the moment. (Has been for awhile). I bought it at the Magnolia Market in Waco, TX during their silobration two years ago. It is sent from one of many distribution locations which are located all over the U.S., Australia, and Chile. It comes blank to the Market and they print the logo in a facility in Waco. The shirt is actually made in Chile from materials sent from Nicaragua. My shirt is a blend of cotton, rayon, and polyester. The cotton is grown and then harvested from the plants by hand (for the most part) just like here in the U.S. Rayon is not a natural fiber and is manufactured in a plant along with polyester. The can be damaging to the environment around it due to waste and pollution. I was not able to contact anyone from that country so I tried the water challenge. I failed miserably. I splashed water everywhere and was not able to hold the bucket I had for very long. This was due to lack of strength and the fact that the handle really hurt my hands. I have no idea how people do that on a daily basis. Very eye opening. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101shyla

sadly, I failed for challenge 8. I wanted to talk to someone from a small business in the US and, luckily, I was in the city that the store is located and where all the items are made at the time of this challenge. I didn’t get a picture of the workers but this is one from their website, taken in their actual store. Melanzana hand makes clothing with sustainable fabrics all made in the US. the best thing about melanzana is the size. it is big enough to have a website and for people in the US to know about them but small enough that they make all of their products in store, in front of customers, and only make them at selective times. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge8

For some this is a reality. Challenge 8.

For #anth101challenge8 , I chose to look into Converse. I have a huge love for this brand because they always seemed to preach ‘made in America’ . After going bankrupt I’m 2003, Converse was bought by Nike who ended the America operations and transferred production to foreign countries such as China, India, and Vietnam. I delved deep into the Nike brand, focusing mostly on Converse operations. I found a factory in Indonesia and tried to call, but the number was invalid. I then emailed the management team only to receive Mailer Daemon notices. Although the Converse website states that they follow the California Transparency Act, I didn’t see much transparency in this company. The closest I got was this picture of Converse being made. . Because I didn’t get to talk to anybody directly from the factory, I decided to take the challenge of living for $2/day . I gave up my phone, laptop, shower, everything. It was a lot harder than I expected. I walked everywhere, which was really difficult for me because I have issues with my knees and hips. I used my $2 to buy fruit because I figured that would give me the best bang for my buck. Finding water in a public area proved very difficult. I relied on water fountains closest to the entrances of buildings ( I didn’t want to spend more the 2 minutes in any building because I would enjoy the electricity ) #anth101 #anth101shyla

Challenge 8 was extremely difficult and unfortunately I failed at the initial challenge, but I was able to speak with a student from Saudi Arabia who is studying English here at Kansa State. She stopped me and wanted to ask me a few questions about Easter and how my family specifically celebrates this holiday. We really hit it off and I started asking her questions about what she does for holidays back home. We started talking about Anthropology and I told her about the topics we are studying in class currently. I asked her if she knew anyone or is familiar with people back home who work closely with creating clothes. She said that she doesn’t know anyone directly who works in those factories but she said that it is very common for poor people to take these jobs. I was familiar with this from the video but it was really interesting to hear it from someone who knew surprisingly a lot about this subject. Talking with someone who I normally wouldn’t have really opened my eyes to different cultures and it was really interesting to hear from someone else’s real live perspectives. #anth101challenge8 #anth101shyla

Under Armour was the company that I've chosen because my whole family wears and uses it. Under armour is primarily manufactured in Asia, Central and South Africw and some things are also made in Mexico. All manufacturers are evaluated for quality systems. They seek out vendors that can perform multiple manufacturing stages such as procuring fabric and providing finished products this helps to reduce cost of good sold. They enter into a variety of agreements with many different manufacturers. They do not have any long-term agreements requiring UA to utilize any manufacture and they are not required to produce UA products in the long term. They have surveyed all of their 130+ suppliers about their energy and water use, and their greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Which they fell in scope 1 and scope 2 and they are looking to better understand energy use at the product level. Scope 1 is the direct type like fossil fuels, and mobile combustion. Scope 2 are from purchased electricity or steam. As of last year UA has began making apparel in the US. UA clothing is made from synthetic fabrics are textiles made from man made fibers rather than natural fibers. Fabrics are made by joining monomers into polymers. The cost of this item is the blood and sweat of the people making the them. I was unable to ever get ahold of anyone directly. I was put on hold and transferred and met with voicemails. I was able to speak to secretaries and get the above information from them or online at UA.com. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101shyla

My brother works for premium waters (a water distributing company). The water bottles get taken to grocery stores by semi trucks. The water bottles materials come from Southeast Asia. The actual water bottle is assembled by factory workers and machinery in Kansas City. The cost of the production of this item is human labor, the loss of natural resources, and gas emissions from the factory.

I was unable to make contact with anyone who had personally made one of my products, so I decided to take on the physical challenge that many people in developing countries must endure on a daily basis. I filled up a bin with 5 gallons of water and walked around campus for as long as i could. It was exhausting! I gained a new level of respect for those have trained themselves to do this to survive. It makes me sad to think that their effort to obtain a resource probably far outweighs the quality of the water they are receiving. #anth101 #anth101challenge8 #anth101shyla

Through this challenge I was able to better understand why her views are the way they are. At the beginning I was skeptical about her views, but through the conversation I began to understand it isn't about trying to change others views, it's about understand how others views are different. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101shyla

For Challenge 7 I spent some time with my 95 pal Clyde. In many aspects we are different. It really caused me to think about all the things I worry and complain about and realize they aren’t so bad. #anth101shyla #anth101challenge7 #anth101wesch

This charming fellow is Don. Don and I were volunteering at the same museum over Spring Break, and he and I have some major differences. I really hate kids and I am not a patient person. Don loves kids and is an extremely patient person. He dedicated his life to helping kids. Don is a retired elementary and middle school principal - he loved teaching, inspiring, and shaping the lives of the kids in the inner city schools that he worked in for decades. Even though he has taught thousands and thousands of children, they all hold a special individual place in his heart. My conversations with Don taught me that being a positive role model to kids shapes the future of our world and that it’s worth it. #anth101challenge7 #anth101 #anth101shyla

#anth101challenge7 . (My other asked to stay anonymous) During spring break, I met Jeremy, a long time friend of my mom’s whom I had never met before.

#anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101shyla Meet my friend and comrade, Isaac. Since we were introduced to each other online through a video game, we hadn't met in person before. Thanks to phone repair issues and a road trip, we were able to catch up face to face. One might think it would be awkward or uncomfortable to "meet" someone you've only interacted with online; however, it could not have felt more natural. Looking forward to seeing this guy again in the summer.

This is my friend from class. His views on many of the questions were quite negative. For example, when I asked him what is perfect day looks like, he responded with a "there is no such thing as a perfect day". However, his love and affection in his life has played a "big role in his life, and I came from a loving family". I think he is going to improve his life however. In his life, he's touched a lot of people including me. When I asked him about the movie scene to describe him he said, "Drinking alone on the beach". I'm concerned for him but I believe his condition will get better. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101shyla

My sister Emma and I have conflicting views on the use of medicinal marajuana so I felt the need to have a talk with her about the issue. She made good points about the few negative affects but over all in my opinion the use of medicinal marajuana should be legal for the entire United States. Helping patients decrease their symptoms and alleviate pain outweighs the negatives. #anth101shyla #anth101 #anth101challenge7

My friend Emily and I sat down to talk about something we have disagreed on for quite some time. Though we are close in all aspects and have relatively similar personalities, we have always differed on our stance with politics. Neither of us like to address it because we would rather keep that out of our relationship so we don’t argue. We decided to talk about it for this class that we are taking together and thought we could learn why each other has this perspective. As we discussed, I learned that a lot of her more liberal views come from people in her family and the way she was raised alongside her brother, who came out as gay when she was in 8th grade. During this discussion, I listened with an open mind and grew to respect her ideology a little bit more. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101shyla

For challenge 7 I had an honest conversation with my brother about why he does not want to attend college in a year. We are two years apart and when my parents started bringing up college talk, he let them know that he was not interested in a traditional college route. He wants to travel and take time off to work and then get a degree down the road. None of us had really understood why this was until I sat down with him and heard him out. He has always been the adventures and imaginative type, but I had never seen why he wanted to travel so soon. He talked me through why he wanted to travel so soon because he will then be able to learn from his experiences and then take those to help him through his journey through college. Talking together and comparing reasons about what we believe in made us grow closer. I now better understand his decisions and I believe he understands mine as well. #anth101 #anth101challenge7 #anth101shyla #anth101wesch

part 1: for challenge 6 I decided to go to church. This is something I haven’t done in a really long time and have been very uncomfortable with in the recent past. But I will be working at a catholic organization this summer so I need to get comfortable with it again. I met some amazing people and felt very welcome despite being gone for so many years. part 2: Challenge 6 was extremely eye opening. I went to church after many years of considering myself agnostic and have many issues with catholic teachings. I grew up in a big catholic family and went to a catholic grade school and high school. After being forced to attend mass every week and learning the same teachings in religion class for 12 years I completely lost my faith and had no interest in finding it again. As well, I grew up with an extremely religious aunt who forced it onto the rest of our family and is very stern in her beliefs. Because of this I had placed a belief that catholics are unrelenting in their beliefs, unaccepting of those that don’t agree and go against their beliefs, and hard to open up to. However, when I went to church I met some amazing people that changed my beliefs and opened me up to a new way of thinking. I can’t say ill be going back every week now but I have definitely changed my stigma and, generally, catholics are the opposite of what I made them out to be. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge6

I feel like I get uncomfortable in many situations, but for this challenge I chose to attend a StuMo meeting since I am atheist. This makes me uncomfortable because I am the type of person to keep my beliefs to myself in order to avoid conflict with people who might have different views. It was an interesting experience and they tried to keep it relatable, but since I am not religious it was hard to understand the message they were trying to get across on a personal level. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge6

Challenge 6 called me to get a little uncomfy and do something out of the norm, so I decided I would attend mass at St. Isadore’s with my best friend. She grew up in a very devoted Catholic family, while I have never had any experience in that realm of religion. I am a Christian, but I really haven’t invested much into my faith until the past year, and all of the churches I’ve been to while I’ve been in Manhattan have been very non traditional, nondenominational churches. I was definitely out of my comfort zone, but I was able to look at things in a new perspective. Even though we may not worship in the same ways, we still worship the same God. #anth101shyla #anth101challenge6 #anth101 #anth101wesch

I visited the Jewish temple in Manhattan, KS. It was a very interesting experience as my religious background is methodists. Throughout the sermon I was very enlightened. The Jewish faith comes from a place of struggle and perseverance. Part of the sermon was conducted by an older gentleman who spoke about how awesome it was to have a president who was Jewish (Obama). To me I had never realized how presidents have predominantly been from the Christian faith. It opened my eyes and made me realize that not everyone is fully represented in our culture. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101shyla

For my Challenge 6, I dove into the most uncomfortable subculture that I could imagine for myself: the Gym Subculture. While I do work out, I’ve only ever delved into the front half of the gym - the treadmills, bikes, etc. I had never tried to use any of the weight machines or anything of the sort. That part of the gym and the really talented people that use it terrified me. So to get uncomfortable, I met with a certified trainer at my gym and worked out with them in that realm of the gym. It was terrifying and I was beyond embarrassed, but I’m proud of myself for doing it. I learned so much about how to properly train and workout and I’m actually going to continue with that trainer. Everyone was so helpful and encouraging and I realized that all of my fears were just misconceptions I had made up. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101shyla

My 28 Day Challenge was to work out every day. This challenge had a positive impact on the areas of my life that I expected it to, but it also had a positive impact on a couple other parts of my life that I didn’t expect. Working out every day started my journey to getting into better shape like I intended it to. Working out every day also made me a much happier morning person, gave me something to look forward to every day, was extremely therapeutic, and gave me something to work toward. While I definitely didn’t want to work out every single day, by pushing myself to get up and get active I established more will power and self discipline than I’ve ever had. I will continue working out every day even though this challenge is over. This picture is of one of my best friends that did the challenge with me! #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge6 The challenge for this week was to go to a location that is unfamiliar and experience a different culture or situation. As an off-campus student, I've never been in to any of the dining centers. In this I saw an opportunity. My expectations were simple, an establishment for students that provides meals. Something like a cafeteria. However, as I took in the environment and began grabbing pictures, the makeup of Kramer Dining Center is elegant and comforting. There's an attention to detail and a nod to artistic design that I hadn't expected. I strive to be an open minded individual but I assumed that Kramer would be efficient and straightforward, clean careful and no nonsense. While it is indeed clean, it surprised me with the amount of character and uniqueness it possessed. It shows that even with inanimate establishments, one would do well to check any assumptions and form opinions based on real interactions. All this said, I'm sure if I worked there I'd go a bit crazy, but regardless these are my reflections on my first introduction to Kramer.

Challenge 6: Get uncomfortable. I decided to take this girl to socialize with new pup friends this weekend. Some events in my past cause me to react to pup to pup introductions with higher than normal levels of anxiety and an incredible need to have control over the situation. I've gone so far as to leave Anela home when I go walking/hiking in new places because I'm not sure what kinds of dogs we might encounter. I'm always worried she and the other dogs won't get along, even though she's a sweetheart and means no harm, as many dogs are. While I do have some events in my past that cause most of these anxieties, as a society we aren't very "pet friendly." They are commonly "house pets" instead of family members, as they aren't allowed, or it isn't common for them to, join regular family festivities outside the home. My beliefs and assumptions about how a situation could unfold absolutely impacts the way I behave with my dog in public as well as the types of places I go. These pup playtimes are something I want to continue influencing in both of our lives. She always adores making new friends and I need continuous exposure to those situations! #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge6

My 28-day challenge was to find one good thing from every day and write it on a post-it note. The point of this challenge was to force myself to reflect on my day and remind myself that everyday is full of good, I just have to look for it. Though I found this challenge difficult because I tend to focus on the negatives in the world, I successfully completed the challenge. At first, I kept forgetting to take time every night to reflect, but as the days went on, I found it easier to remember and reflect on each day. I think this challenge did help remind me that despite all the bad in the world, there is still good out there. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge3

#anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge3 It's been 28 days since Challenge 3 began. It's been a difficult, enlightening, fast-paced, but ultimately rewarding period of time. Of the three things I chose to pursue, I'm most content with my results on the piano. Emotionally and in terms of skill, putting effort into playing an instrument routinely had a fantastic effect on me. I plan to continue reaching new heights on piano. With my exercise pursuits, I had a great start. I worked it into my morning routine and all was going well. However, nearly ten days ago I badly injured my left hand with a construction knife. This has put something of a pause on my routine but I'll jump back in when my hand better heals. Lastly, I'm still trying to conquer the wiles of procrastination. Small progress was made but still, a little is a progress regardless. This challenge may be concluded, but I'm still eagerly awaiting the future to continue challenging myself.

I was born into a very religious Christian family. For my challenge 6 of getting uncomfortable, i went to a Catholic Church. I have never been to a Catholic Church until today. I realized with the way each service is held, compared to my church, is a lot more serious and seemed to follow strict guide lines. Catholicism is socially constructed to have a strict few hours each Sunday to completely devote their time to God through traditions of singing hems and scripture reading. Catholics also have the practice of participating in Lent by giving up an important aspect of their daily lives for God. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101shyla

this week I spent some time with some members of the improv troupe to get out of my comfort zone. Now I know to be more open-minded, because I might actually have fun. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge6

28 Day Challenge Reflection Photos 1-3: As I began my challenge, I was surprised to find that playing guitar is a bit grueling— my fingers compensated for the metal strings by forming calluses. Holding the guitar on my lap leaves deep red lines on my thighs, and as I learned to strum, I got a blood blister on my thumb. Video 1: here I was focusing on learning the chords of the song. The finger placement was rather difficult to learn, and switching between chords took a lot of practice. Video 2: this is where I began to focus on switching more smoothly between chords to match the rhythm of the song better. Video 3: I started learning the fingerpicking for the song during this week. It’s much different than just strumming the strings— you have to be much more deliberate in thinking about what finger goes where to achieve that sound. Video 4: Finally, after a lot of practice and determination, Vance Joy’s “Georgia” became recognizable from my playing. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s much more cohesive than when i first began. Overall, I found that breaking up my challenge into parts allowed me to focus on individual aspects of my playing, and thereby allowed me to gradually improve. I was proud of myself for continuing to work at my goal and have something decent as a final product of my hard work. #anth101challenge3 #anth101 #anth101shyla

This past Wednesday, I decided to go to church. I don’t identify with any particular religion anymore, as I let go of my Christian beliefs almost 10 years ago. As Pastor Parsley went through his sermon, I found myself watching the people around me more than I actually listened. I felt like an outsider, or a trespasser, sitting next to people who have devoted a huge part of their lives to the belief in the stories the Bible tells. I’ve always thought that you can’t believe in something that you can’t see.. but this challenge made me question that . #anth101challenge6 #anth101 #anth101shyla

#anth101bestofchallenge5 #Repost @millaranthro ・・・ My Unthing Challenge of giving up my smartphone for 48 hours was a success! I was way more present in my interactions with people, way more focused on my schoolwork, and I read a lot more. This picture is of my favorite reading nook in my room, which is where I spent most of my 48 hours. I thought that not having my phone would leave me feeling disconnected from the world, but I felt a lot closer to all of the people around me because I wasn’t looking down at my phone. This challenge made me realize how unessential my phone is, even though I’ve believed that I couldn’t live without it in my hands at all times. #anth101bestofchallenge5 #Repost @kstateanthromeg ・・・ After not using social media for a week I was able to spend moments like this (taking my dog outside) to actually enjoy my surroundings. Playing fetch instead of being on my phone, and it was really nice. I’ve learned to disconnect more often and trough that my stress has actually decreased and my focus on everything else in my life has increased. I’ll definitely continue keeping my social media use to a minimum like life used to be. I also think I’ll take Facebook off my phone and only check it when I’m on a computer (like we used to have to do) and use my phone just as a phone. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101shyla

#anth101bestofchallenge5 #Repost @karaanthro ・・・ For my #5 UnThing experiment I will be giving up mirrors. I believe this will be a good experience for me because I constantly doubt my appearance and I want to see if the mirror is the reason for low self confidence. I think this is going to be an incredibly good learning and experience and allow me to grow as an individual and focus on other qualities rather than just one. I'm super excited for the challenge!! #anth101shyla #anth101 #anth101wesch #anth101challenge5

I know I'm super behind on this but my 28 day challenge is officially complete and I have now been soda free for 28 days! I know that doesn't seem like much but for me it is. Along with this challenge I've realized a couple of things: 1. I eat less fast food places because I usually went for cheap pop and now that I don't drink it, I'm not going there just for the food 2. Because I'm not eating out as much I'm not spending as much money and also saving money due to not buying bottles of pop which are kind of expensive. 3. I feel so much better. Due to me drinking more water and eating not as much junk food, I feel so good. 4. I'm much more motivated. I feel so good giving up something so bad and that's rolled over into other good habits. Like going to the gym and making better choices all around be it food, finances, and happiness. Just all around good stuff going on. I've decided to start a new challenge for the month of March and that is to go to the gym at least once a day for the whole month! I'm super excited and couldn't have made this happen without anth101! #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101shyla (the March challenge isn't for class, just for me 😊)

Challenge 6: Get Uncomfortable. For this challenge I decided to do something I've never done before. Instead of grocery shopping at target, Walmart or Dillion's I went to the local Korean market named Yi's Market. Before experiencing this different culture I thought it was going to be a seafood market with super strange food that I would never like. This wasn't true at all. It was a normal small market with a lot of the same foods that they sell at the generic American grocery stores, but made and packaged differently. They had fresh meat in the back of the store that they sell for much cheaper than the stores I usually go to. Besides the prices being MUCH cheaper they had shelves stacked to the ceilings of American based food but produced by Korean companies, for example microwaveable meals, chips and various chocolate treats. This experience made me go out of my comfort zone and experience a different culture right in my backyard (figure of speech). Even going just down the street to a new place I still experienced uncomfortableness with language barriers, they didn't allow credit cards and when I walked in i experienced a lot of different looks because they don't see people like me come in everyday. Learning and experiencing someone else's culture made me learn so much about myself and the way I interpret different cultures. I now know to not be too quick to judge something before I really experience it and I'm glad I overcame that through this challenge! #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101wesch #anth101challenge6

28 day reflection: For my 28 day challenge I went gluten free and dairy free. It was incredibly hard especially when faced with temptation at the dining halls. I stayed true everyday except one day so over all I would call this a success! After a week into the challenge I could feel myself gaining more energy, especially when I work out. I felt healthy all the time and it made me not snack in the middle of the day as much. I definitely will continue being gluten free and dairy free and working out as much as I did over these 28 days! #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge3reflection

Hello! For Challenge 6, I went to Hip Hop Cardio at the Rec. This was obviously my first time going and my first time ever going to a dancing class. I'm 100% sure I had the least amount of rhythm out of anyone. The reason it pushed me outside of my comfort zone is because all of the class is female & I was about the only guy; on top of the fact I'm the worst dancer of all time. I got a ton of weird looks so that added on top of it. The social construct for these type of classes is that it's for girls only & if you are a guy doing them then you're strange. The "common sense" I learned from this is even though you are in an environment you are not comfortable with, it can be very enjoyable. I truly did have a lot of fun. #anth101 #anth101challenge6 #anth101shyla

Hey! I have finished my 28 day challenge of working out every day. I have done a bad job of updating on the situation and I apologize. Through out the 28 day challenge I've done more and more body weight excerises. As weeks went by I did more and more unique and different excerises my friend would not do. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101shyla

My 28 day challenge was to not eat processed foods. Being in college was this challenge a little difficult. Because it is so easy to grab a bag of chips or crackers. So there were some days I ate chips or crackers, but after I ate those my body wasn't fueled it was comfortable. I felt comfortable instead of energized to take on the day. The biggest lesson from my 28 day challenge has been "eat to nourish your body." There are so many benefits to eating natural foods. So there may be some days that I grab a bag of chips but from the challenge it opened my eyes to be more perceptive to the choices I make regarding snacks. I am eating to fuel my complex strong body. #anth101 #anth101challenge3 #anth101shyla

Over the last 28 days I've had many up and downs. I tried to keep motivated and achieve my goals daily. Sadly I fell ill with a stomach virus and then a upper respitory illness. It tends to knock a busy mom down. So I've decided to continue this challenge. When I was able to commit and succeed I made my 10,000 steps or more a day. Averaging about 11,000. So I feel semi accomplished in my challenge but not fully accomplished. So I will continue on. #anth101 #anth101challenge3reflection #anth101shyla

Reflection: I waited a day later to post this because I wanted the full week experience of no social media. It’s really brighten my eyes to how toxic it can be. I’ve started to notice more things that happen around me that I normally would’ve missed because i was spending my time on social media (like this sweet pic of my dogs) . I found myself feeling anxious the first day or so without it, and then became calm and relieved the longer I went without. For a while, social media seemed to be a main part of my day.. but without it, i now “have” the time to do better things! #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge5

During my UnThing I got the flu. I wasn't able to go out into the world and document experiences without my social media feeds distracting me, so I read The Martian instead because I don't read books that often. #anth101challenge5 #anth101 #anth101shyla

My experiment giving up Snapchat did not go as well as I wanted. I had a few moments of weakness due to Snapchat being a primary way for me to communicate with my friends and family. I did however find myself with more time in my day to do fun things like play with this adorable puppy on the days I succeeded in the challenge and refrained from Snapchat usage. #anth101challenge5 #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101wesch

I chose to give up my scale. I am in the process of losing weight and I felt if the scale didn't report what I wanted it would ruin my entire day. It didn't matter how hard I worked at the gym or how strong I felt from the food I ate. My mind let me delete all of that and only focus on the number that were in front of me. The second pictures are my thoughts on the morning right before getting on the scale. I have learned that the scale can't define my hard work. I am still trying to lose weight and become healthy, but I have made it my plan to only weigh once or twice a week. Instead of obsessing about it. #anth101challenge5 #anth101 #anth101shyla

I have been off snapchat for 8 days now, and honestly I have found it really refreshing. Instead of constantly checking people’s stories or feeling the need to send updates on my life every time I wanted a distraction from homework. Taking this time away from snapchat has made me realize how much time I waste on social media trying to prove to both myself and other people that my life is exciting. Instead of using snapchat as an alternative to actual interaction, I have been more involved with my friends and remembered how nice it is to talk and build connections with people face-to-face. After this challenge and lesson, I am hoping to slowly decrease my social media use because it has started to consume my life in a negative way. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101shyla

It’s been over a week since I’ve been MIA from social media and it’s been a good week at that. At first I had some withdrawals. Anytime I had a free moment I was forced to find something to do other than mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or Facebook. It proved to be really useful when I had three tests to study for and didn’t take study break to check out what was going on in the digital world. Instead I created new distractions for studying like ordering Insomnia cookies with friends. I also feel like I’ve been more intentional with my friends. Instead of communicating with one line answers via Snapchat, I’ve been having more meaningful conversations both in person and via text message. My favorite thing has been having breakfast with my roommate in the morning. Usually my first communication with the world would be through my phone, but my breakfast dates have been a better start to my days. One thing I think I have learned from this challenge is to be more present in the moment. Sometimes it’s more important to just be than to document every little thing. #anth101shyla #anth101 #anth101wesch #anth101challenge5

For challenge 5 I decided to give up mirrors. Throughout this entire week I feel like I was able to really appreciate myself a lot more because I wasn't focused on what I looked like all the time. Not having a mirror and constantly trying not to see my reflection was one of the hardest things I've had to do. I had to go about my day without a mirror, which means getting ready was not a pretty site; but it really made me realize how much I rely on what I look like. I felt my self-confidence increase because I wasn't staring at my insecurities in the mirror for 10 minutes at a time. Instead I was doing something better with my time and doing things that made me happy. I also didn't realize how often you really do see your reflection. Just walking to class and seeing my reflection in the windows or washing my hands in the bathroom was something that was really challenging not to look at. I really enjoyed this challenge and I thought it taught me a lot about myself. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge5reflection

My Unthing Challenge of giving up my smartphone for 48 hours was a success! Although I must admit, working out without being able to listen to music was awful. #anth101challenge5 #anth101 #anth101shyla

It’s been a week since I slept with a pillow, and I sure do miss the neck support. Sleeping flat has done strange things to my back and I find myself waking up often throughout the night. I also slept on my arms a lot, causing them to get numb. However, I do feel like I am a little stronger without it. I know now that a pillow is a mere convenience, and I could definitely survive without it if need be. I understand that there are many people who don’t get to use a pillow, especially the homeless or perhaps even other cultures, and sleeping like this for a week has allowed me to commend them for their abilities. I think that I’ll definitely go back to using it though, as comfort in bed is what helps me get a good night’s rest. #anth101shyla #anth101 #anth101challenge5

Hey, all! I have finished my UnThing experiment and it has improved me. I learned social media is only going to make you feel insecure and make you consumed in a "fake world". I learned social media is good to go through maybe once a week but shouldn't be something to constantly be going through daily. It's a good thing to check up with your friends with. I'm very thankful I went through this & know I will use social media much more wisely throughout the future. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101shyla

#anth101 #anth101challenge5reflection #anth101shyla This is my conclusion of challenge 5, which was relinquishing a technology in order to mentally discover ways in which that thing transforms your life as well as society in general. In reflection, my act of giving up music in public spaces seemed to prolong time. My walks across campus seemed longer, times of waiting dragged on, and it often seemed like I had more time to be mentally adventurous. For me, music is both an aid to staying focused but on the other hand can also be a massive mental distraction. Pushing my head into a quiet empty space was more unfamiliar feeling than I expected it to be; it was an experience with positive and also negative results. I was more aware of the people around, i felt more engaged with my surroundings and able to participate. However, similar to how giving up coffee would likely make a person moody, i did feel the musical withdrawal acutely. It's such a part of who I am that giving it away for the greater part of 1 week took its toll. In conclusion, it is my goal to strike a balance between the two extremes. I plan to continue listening to music in high traffic places however, i want to stay aware of both the people around me but also the situations.

So for Challenge 5 I decided to give up Facebook for 5 days and that included Messenger. I think the first thing I noticed is that I had to change my morning routine a little. When I wake up I immediately check social media and usually Facebook first so that took some getting used to and I finally caught on the third day. I also didn't realize how much I went to check on Facebook throughout the day. Since I couldn't be on it I realized how much I actually was on it a day (if that makes sense). It also was difficult in a way I never would have thought. For example, I go to the bar last weekend and meet some new people but unfortunately because I couldn't get on Messenger I actually missed out on going out with them the next night because we had no other way to communicate at that time. I was kind of shocked and didn't realize this challenge would affect me that way. My biggest realization is that I felt a little more relaxed throughout the day and not as much pressure to keep up on current events on Facebook with friends and family. I was so relaxed and not as stressed that I have actually considered getting rid of my Facebook because it was such a positive feeling. Definitely something to consider. #anth101 #anth101challenge5 #anth101shyla

over this week i began to classify myself as an addict. an internet addict. the amount of time I spend and things I do on the internet is completely ridiculous. quitting cold turkey probably wasn’t the best idea but it opened me up to how much I’m missing with my head in my phone or computer. I’ve also started to realize the lack of meaning behind a relationship that is maintained over the internet. I had a few people message me over the week just wanted to say hi or that we hadn’t talked in a while but what exactly does this mean if im only hearing from them a few times a year and we never make the effort to meet up in person? all in all im glad I gave yo the internet and I think it will really spark a change in my life. #anth101 #anth101shyla #anth101challenge5
